I am writing to express concern about the recent budget cuts in Lexington that have resulted in educators losing their jobs. These decisions not only affect school staff but also have a direct and lasting impact on students, families, and the broader community.
Recent reductions in school funding have led to layoffs of dedicated educators and support staff. These professionals play a critical role in students’ academic success, emotional well-being, and access to essential resources. When schools lose staff, students—especially those already facing systemic barriers—lose vital support systems that help them thrive.
From a social work perspective, these cuts raise serious concerns about equity and access. Schools are often the primary point of connection for mental health services, food security, and individualized learning support. Reducing staff disproportionately impacts students from marginalized backgrounds, widening existing opportunity gaps, and undermining principles of social justice and antiracism.
To address this issue, I urge community members and policymakers to advocate for restoring and protecting school funding. This includes contacting local officials, attending school committee meetings, and supporting budgets that prioritize student services and educator retention. Ensuring equitable access to quality education requires sustained investment in the people who make that possible.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
