Lexington can celebrate that for 16 years, there has been a community project collaboratively working together to grow free food for the Lexington Food Pantry. Twice a week, teams of church and community volunteers work together on a fenced-in (bunny-proof) plot of land in Lexington Center to grow fresh organic produce. During the 2024 growing season over 1,600 pounds of fresh picked organic food in 51 varieties was walked over to the pantry in carts—all grown at the Lexington Interfaith Garden. First time gardeners work there beside experienced gardeners, so there’s a learning exchange, and its a great way to meet others who want to contribute to a stronger community in Lexington.

When the Lexington Interfaith Garden started, the pantry was mostly offering canned food. The good news is there are now more sources of fresh produce for the pantry. The bad news is that food need has grown exponentially and the pantry now needs cash, as well as garden produce, to keep offering healthy food for our neighbors who don’t have enough to eat. The need has outgrown the supply. What can you do to help?

  • Garden with us at the Interfaith Garden: Instructions will be provided and many families work together with their children. The Lexington Interfaith Garden ends with the cold frost somewhere near Halloween. You can sign up for a 1.5 hour work shift on a Saturday morning at 8 a.m., or Tuesday late afternoon at 4:30 p.m. (Note: The garden is in walking distance of Lexington High School and students can get community service hours.) Anyone interested in working in the garden can email: gardenschedulers@gmail.com
  • Donate your surplus produce to the food pantry by dropping it off at the garden by 8:15 a.m. on a Saturday. Go to the First Parish Church parking lot and look for the white barn.
  • Volunteer at the Pantry:
People are needed to drive food, sort food, organize volunteers, and prepare the pantry for it’s 9:30 a.m. Saturday distribution. Community Service hours are available to high school students.
