Veronika Luise (Knapp) Huber, of Lexington, MA, passed away on April 7th, 2024, in Uelzen Lower Saxony, Germany, due to heart-related complications.

Veronika was born October 3, 1937, in Wiesbaden, Germany to the late Franz and Luise (Haller) Knapp, both of the Black Forest. She was predeceased by her siblings Peter, Franz and Marlies.

After graduation from the Elly-Heuss-Realgymnasium, Veronika worked her way up to the position of a commercial clerk to the directorate of Dyckerhoff Zementwerke from 1953 to 1963. She met her future husband, Hans Juergen, an aspiring architect working on Dyckerhoff’s new headquarters, in 1962.

An engagement gift in 1963 from her future in-laws was a first-class trip on the M.S. Berlin ship to New York, where they were awestruck by the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty, where the Dyckerhoff corporation had donated the foundation eight decades earlier. They were greeted by Veronika’s close cousins, the Muenkels. They both worked in New York for a year.

Upon acceptance to the MIT Architecture Department, Hans J. brought Veronika back to her native Wiesbaden where they were married on January 11, 1964. They continued their 60-year journey in Revere, Somerville, and in 1967 bought a house in Lexington where they raised two wonderful sons, Hans H., and Rolf.

Veronika worked part time at Lexington Gardens. She loved gardening and her amazing backyard was filled with flowers that attracted a wide range of butterflies and birds, and she also became a birdwatcher. Their fragrant garden was a place they often shared with friends and family.

Veronika was a true artist, making decorative candles embedded with miniature flowers. She was a devoted singer in the Sacred Heart choir and her beautiful voice opened many Christmas midnight masses with Franz Xaver Gruber’s “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht.” She enjoyed playing the piano and her uncle’s accordion for family and friends. She loved to bake German cakes and biscuits for friends and on special occasions. Veronika was an avid reader on politics, philosophy, and religion, including books by her German cousin theologian Karl Rahner, S.J. She was caring, thoughtful and always put her family and friends before herself.

Veronika and Hans J. traveled to Germany in 2022. Veronika is survived by her husband, Hans J., their sons, Hans Harald (Rumjana) and Rolf (Eugenia) She also leaves three beautiful grandchildren Carl, Alex, and Max.
