Lexington’s Girl Scout Troops were awarded First Place in the Youth category for their creative float for the Patriots Day Parade. With a theme of “Lexington Girl Scouts Embrace the Revolutionary Spirit,” the float paid homage to 6 Revolutionary women who supported the Battle of Lexington and witnessed the aftermath. It was a fitting tribute to women’s contributions during that time.
One of the standout features of the float was a re-creation of Buckman Tavern, a historic site associated with the Revolution’s very first battle, the 1775 Battle of Lexington, and the family business of Ruth Buckman, who was honored on the float. The tavern was built out of recycled Girl Scout cookie boxes.
The Girl Scouts collaborated with LexSeeHer, the local non-profit bringing Lexington its first women’s monument, to design their float. They’ve collaborated with LexSeeHer on various projects over the past 3 years including the Women’s Visibility Banners Project, the Ceremony for Banner Honorees, Re-enactment of the Spinning Protest, fundraising, honoring Revolutionary women in their Girl Scout Float for the Patriots Day Parade, and planning the 2024 Monument Unveiling Ceremony.
