The Cary Lecture Series in collaboration with Cary Library presents “Creating Equality of Opportunity in America: New Insights from Big Data,” with award-winning economist Raj Chetty. The talk is free and open to the public and takes place at Cary Hall on Saturday evening, April 20, at 8:00 pm.

Children’s chances of earning more than their parents have fallen from 90% to 50% over the past half-century in America. In his work with colleagues at Harvard University and the nonprofit, Opportunity Insights, Professor Chetty explores how we can restore the American Dream of upward mobility for our children. Chetty will discuss how and why children’s chances of climbing the income ladder vary across neighborhoods, the persistence of racial disparities in economic mobility, and the role of social capital in promoting upward mobility. In recent months, Chetty’s groundbreaking research has been covered in major news outlets such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, and it is influencing policies in domains ranging from affordable housing to higher education.
