When we bought a condo in Lexington 30 years ago, we weren’t thinking about the school system, because we already knew having kids wasn’t in the cards for us. But we did like what we found here: the history, the conservation land and the proximity to our jobs. We also recognized the role public schools played in what made Lexington special. So, we didn’t begrudge paying the taxes that support our schools, just as we don’t begrudge paying for a police and fire department whose services we have yet to need. Although we may quibble sometimes about priorities and budgets, we fundamentally like being somewhere that adequately takes care of the needs of everyone who lives here.
We now look at the high school project vote in front of us. No one loves a tax increase, but we understand the set of circumstances that have affected its expected cost. We haven’t heard an alternative proposed that wouldn’t seriously degrade conditions for students and staff. In sum, we’ll be voting ‘YES’ for the high school and encouraging our friends and neighbors to do the same.
