Lexington, MA is famous for its role in the American Revolution. It was the destination of Paul Revere’s midnight ride and the site of the first shot of the Revolutionary War, fired during the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Today, the Lexington Historical Society regularly hosts American Revolution reenactments, and will soon open a history museum.
Lexington residents also played a prominent role during the abolitionist movement. Lexington’s female residents have ranged from aviators to astrophysicists, feats celebrated by the recently-installed LexSeeHer monument. After celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, the town has been named one of the New York Times’ best places to visit in 2025.
