Smoke from wildfires in Canada cast a sepia hue over New England and beyond this week. Air quality in the Boston area Wednesday reached a level considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, adults over 65, and people with respiratory issues such as asthma. The air smelled like a campfire and left many people with a scratchy feeling in their throats. Though the haze had lifted by Thursday morning, it’s likely to return — perhaps this afternoon. If not, we’ll surely see it next year — what used to be a rare, mysterious phenomenon seems to have become an annual occurrence.
