Cadette Troops 70116 and 83234 recently visited the MIT D-Lab to learn how engineering can be used to address global challenges.

During the visit, D-Lab instructor and Lexington resident Matt McCambridge led the girls through a hands-on mechanical engineering activity focused on creating charcoal briquettes from agricultural waste. The project demonstrated how communities in developing nations can convert local organic waste into sustainable, clean-burning cooking fuel using low-cost tools and processes.

The girls also toured the lab with D-Lab communications officer Nancy Adams and learned more about D-Lab’s mission and student-led innovation projects, including medical transport solutions designed for challenging environments.

The visit gave the girls a firsthand look at how STEM skills can be applied to improve lives and solve practical problems around the world.
