About 750 demonstrators lined Mass. Ave. in Lexington on Saturday, holding signs with slogans like “Abolish ICE,” cardboard cutouts of the Statue of Liberty, and photographs of Renee Good, the Minneapolis mother who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on Wednesday. The protest was one of at least a thousand anti-ICE protests planned across the country this weekend.

Serious question to all of the protestors. If we abolish ICE how do we lawfully control immigration? We can’t have open boarders. We can’t have masses of undocumented people in this country. Rather than emotional protests it would be more beneficial to have rational protests with viable solutions.
If we abolish ICE we start over and learn from this fiasco. We already have border patrol agency. We have immigration folks at airports where most illegals enter from. The org and its culture are so malignant that better to start afresh.
FWIW- very proud to be a Lexingtonian last Sat. This is how you push back against authoritarian regimes.
I totally agree that ICE is malignant, and needs to be eliminated.
Instead of ICE, the US could pass a national, mandatory E-Verify. E-Verify is a way of checking peoples’ immigration status when they apply for jobs, that is already required by multiple states. (There was a failed effort to pass E-Verify in Massachusetts a year or two ago.)
What is with the democracy signs? The country voted in Trump who campaigned on deporting the 12+ million King Biden welcomed in the country without any voter mandate to do so. Trump is doing what people voted him in to do. That IS democracy in action. I’m disappointed that people here don’t understand Democracy and what a republic is.
