The recent tampering with the flag on Lexington Battle Green is deeply troubling. Regardless of one’s political views, altering a national symbol on such historic ground is an act of disrespect to our town, to our history, and to the principles of democratic expression.

Lexington is indeed the “Birthplace of American Liberty,” and that legacy calls us to uphold freedom in a lawful and honorable manner. When disagreements arise, they should be voiced through open debate, civic participation and respectful dialogue—not by vandalizing public property or desecrating a symbol that belongs to all Americans.

I urge our community to stand together in rejecting acts that dishonor the Battle Green and what it represents. We may differ in politics, but we should be united in our commitment to preserving the dignity of this sacred space and to honoring the sacrifices that give us the liberty to disagree.

  1. Well said, Mr. Barg. People arguing Charlie Kirk does not merit having the flag flown half-staff are missing the point, for all the reasons you so eloquently stated.

  3. Very well-stated, Mr. Barg. I am disheartened by the response of my fellow residents of Lexington to this blatant act of disrespect and vandalism, as many voices in town have minimized its significance and revealed their hatred of a man who stood for open and respectful dialogue.
