Ronan Morrison, a 6th grader in Lexington, has recently visited the State House to receive his prize in the statewide Letters about Literature competition. Sponsored by the Massachusetts Center for the Book, the competition asks students to write a letter to the author of a book and explain how it has inspired them. Ronan wrote to Sharon Draper on the book Out of my Mind. As a blind, non-speaking student, he relates to the experience of his intelligence often being passed over because he cannot speak with his voice. He concludes his letter with: “The book helped me also realise that humour can coexist with anger, frustration, and sadness that comes from living in a body not designed for this world.” He was accompanied by sight-guided friend and classmate, Charlotte.
