About 20 men dressed in matching army-green shirts, their faces hidden by white masks and sunglasses, protested in front of the Massachusetts National Guard armory in Lexington on Saturday afternoon. The group held a sign reading “Repel the Invaders, Join the Minutemen.”

The building recently began serving as a shelter for migrant families and others in need of emergency housing.

A spokesperson for the Lexington police initially said the protesters were members of Patriot Front, a white supremacist organization known for its anti-immigrant, antisemitic and anti-LGBTQ+ propaganda. Their sign suggests that they are part of a smaller, lesser known group called the New England Minutemen (mentioned here, here and here) that appears connected to other anti-immigrant milita groups.

“”It was intended to be a frightening display and it was,” said one Lexington resident who happened to drive by during the protest.

White supremacist groups have had a growing presence in Massachusetts in recent years.

Their were no reported issues regarding Saturday’s protest, according to Lexington Director of Communications Jonas Miller. The demonstration ended without incident.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the protesters were members of Patriot Front.

  1. This is the New England Minutemen. They’ve been promoted by NSC 131. Not Patriot Front.

  2. Lexington schools staffs, teachers and administrators; policemen and policewomen and everyone please be kind to our newly arrivals. This is a nation of immigrants. As soon as they can they work hard and pay taxes.

  3. Do this in downtown Lexington on a Saturday; see how popular your narrow minded bigotry will be in such an ethnically diverse town. You are cowards who hide their r faces; and ignorant fools who forget their ancestors came from elsewhere… Disgusting display in front of a National Guard Armory no less!!!
