Lexingtonians, I ask for your vote as I seek re-election to the Planning Board. It has been my privilege to serve our community working towards a more inclusive, sustainable and vibrant town, and I’m eager to continue in this important role. With the election just a few short weeks away on Tuesday, March 5th (with early voting starting in February), I’m asking for your vote to continue as a member of the Planning Board.

As a product of Lexington Public Schools, I’ve called this community home for as long as I can remember. With over two decades of experience in corporate marketing, advertising and real estate, I bring a unique perspective to the Planning Board, advocating for equitable zoning policies and housing initiatives that benefit all members of our town.

As a member of the Planning Board, I have pursued ongoing education in Planning, Land Use, Zoning, Responsibilities of Planning Boards, Fair Housing and more, ensuring that I am equipped with the knowledge and expertise necessary to make informed decisions. In Town Meeting, I’ve collaborated to help shape policies that promote inclusivity and equity. Additionally, I have actively engaged with various town committees, including the Housing Partnership Board, Comprehensive Plan, Transportation Advisory Committee, and Ad Hoc Diversity Advisory Task Force.

I strongly support inclusionary zoning, and one of my primary focuses has been advancing zoning improvements and creating diverse housing options that align with our Comprehensive Plan. I advocated for and helped pass the MBTA Communities Bylaw, which is an important tool in creating multi-family and mixed-use housing options. Sustainable practices are key to responsible development, and I’m committed to integrating these building principles into our planning board proposals and zoning plans, ensuring that Lexington remains an environmental leader.

The incentives we provided for mixed-use development in the MBTA Community Village Overlays will help to prevent further erosion of our commercial districts while increasing our tax revenue base to support the essential town services we need and expect. It’s important to support the development of Life Science projects such as those in the Hartwell Ave. and Hayden Ave. areas. These types of new commercial developments create physical spaces for residents and employees to enjoy, and generate much needed commercial tax revenue streams for our town, easing the burden on residential taxpayers.

I’m running for re-election because I want to continue to be part of the decision-making process on issues that impact our town. Please read what supporters say at www.melaniethompson.org. Let’s shape the future of Lexington to ensure that our community remains a welcoming and thriving place for all. I ask for your vote on Tuesday, March 5th or earlier. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to continuing to serve you on the Planning Board.
