Truth is important, and as a golem, Emmett was made to defend it. Emmett is new to his school – Collinstein Academy – and new to the world – he was only made 3.5 week ago, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to fight for the truth. The problem? If any of the nagas, djinn, imps, or other mythical creatures at school start lying, Emmett might lose control. And when Emmett loses control, others can get hurt.
Cryptid Academy is the debut novel by local author and teacher Howard Wolke. For the last 16 years, Wolke has been living in Sudbury and working at Diamond Middle School in Lexington. That time in a middle school was a large inspiration for the book: “Middle school students are going through a lot. New friends, new teachers, new hormones racing through their bodies. I wanted to create a character that is dealing with all of this, while also being simply unable to cope with any of the lying that students do, whether to protect their feelings from others, or to protect others from their feelings.”
Wolke will read from his book and sign copies at Maxima Book Center in Lexington on Dec. 4 from 2:00-3:00PM.
