The Colored Soldier in the Civil War

June 8, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm EDT
Free

The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company A reenactors of Hyde Park, MA, along with their display of infantry equipment and literature, will present their educational interpretation of the first regiment of African American soldiers recruited in the North to serve in the Federal Army during the Civil War, 1861 – 65. Approximately 200,000 black men will serve in the federal army and naval forces during the war and are arguably the critical difference that ensured the defeat of the Confederacy. The Bedford First Baptist Church hosts this event and invites the community to participate in this educational and entertaining show. We will also view the award-winning film, Glory, about the 54th MVIR, and participate in a “talk-back” with the reenactors to critique and separate fact from fiction in the cinematic portrayal. It will be an enjoyable afternoon with you there, so come and join us. Admission is free and popcorn is provided; otherwise, BYOF.
