Illuminate Heritage: Lightscapes of Lexington, Honoring Lexington’s Citizen Heroes

By Jiawei Liu, Lexington High School

Looking for a fun, meaningful and memorable way to spend a summer night?

On May 30, students from the Youth STEAM Initiative will present Illuminate Heritage: Lightscapes of Lexington, an immersive projection mapping experience at the Lexington Depot from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Using light, animation, and real community imagery, this student-created show will transform local architecture into a living story, one that shines a spotlight on citizen heroes, from important historical figures to the heroes among us today.

Who Are Lexington’s Heroes?

Through the theme “Step Forward”, the show strives to ask a simple and powerful question: What makes a hero?

The show will provide a both humble and profound answer: A hero is someone who chooses to step forward and makes a difference.

Through a sequence of visual scenes, the program traces this journey:

  • A quiet moment when something is needed
  • A decision to act
  • Real moments of service, creativity, and leadership
  • The lasting impact on others
  • And the ripple effect that continues through the community

These stories are drawn from real life in Lexington, featuring volunteers, cultural organizations, students, families, and neighbors whose everyday actions shape the town profoundly.

A Collective Story, Told in Light

Rather than celebrating a select few, Illuminate Heritage Night reveals something deeper:

An entire community where the everyday actions of many add up to create something meaningful and lasting. Audiences will see:

  • Children making art and imagining new possibilities
  • Students designing, building, and innovating through STEAM
  • Cultural groups sharing traditions and connecting communities
  • Residents coming together in events, celebrations, and service

Each moment is a reminder that heroism is powerful and important, but not rare, and it can be woven into daily life.

What to Expect

  • A powerful fusion of light, art, history, and technology
  • Stunning architectural projection mapping set to a relaxed summer evening atmosphere
  • Carefully crafted animations and real imagery from the Lexington community
  • Stories that honor the people who quietly and consistently make a difference
  • A shared experience that invites everyone to reflect: What role can I play?

An Invitation

To conclude the evening, the Youth STEAM Initiative will present one last message, this time for the audience:

It all starts with one step.
What will you do?
Who will you help?

Because in Lexington, the next hero is not someone else—
it might be you.

Join us on May 30 and see our community in a whole new light.
