The sources of renewable energy included in the 100% Green option within Lexington’s Community Choice Program have changed to protect program participants from a potential price increase, which could have occurred due to a change in government regulations.
State law requires that all electricity must include a minimum from renewable sources. To ensure that participants in the 100% Green option receive all of their electricity from renewable sources, the program purchases additional renewable energy over and above state minimum requirements. Previously, that additional renewable energy included a mix from MA Class I sources, which are from new renewable energy projects in the New England region, and wind projects from outside the New England region. Now, that additional renewable energy comes wholly from wind projects outside the New England region, which is less expensive.
This change will allow the program to hold prices steady for all participants in all three program options with no price increase through December 2026.
