SUMMARY:Liberty is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cary Library\n\nIn Woody Holton’s  “hidden history” of the American Revolution\, nothing is quite what it seems. The phrase “Liberty is Sweet” sounds like the sentiments of Jefferson or Franklin\, but actually comes from a 1775 letter describing George Washington’s slaves’ aspirations to escape Mount Vernon. Holton entitled his preface “Invisible Enemies” in a nod to the Native Americans who were long omitted from the story of American Independence but played a crucial role in bringing on the Revolutionary War and shaping its course. And these are far from the only surprises in Holton’s astounding reappraisal of the founding of the United States. Holton challenges much of the history we imagined we knew and aims to tell stories of the many who fought for liberty.\n\nThis event will be moderated by Robert A. Gross.\n\nAdmission is free and first-come\, first-served.

SUMMARY:Harmony on the Green welcomes bluegrass and acoustic duo The Cadleys\, with Mel opening
DESCRIPTION:The Cadleys have been entertaining audiences throughout Upstate New York and New England with their powerful mix of traditional bluegrass and “new acoustic” a la Alison Krauss. Their music has been captured on six CDs—two with John and The Lost Boys\, two John and Cathy duet albums\, and two solo projects featuring John’s songwriting. Their live performances bring it all to life with hair-raising harmony singing\, virtuoso musicianship\, and entertaining audience rapport that leaves them with the feeling that they’ve enjoyed a truly special night of music. \nMel is a singer-songwriter steeped in soul and rock ’n roll. With vocals reminiscent of Miranda Lambert\, Bonnie Raitt\, Jewel\, and Stevie Nicks\, she’s been praised for her healing voice & poetic lyrical work.  Mel’s internationally acclaimed collaborations with electronic producers have been likened to the stylings of Alina Baraz\, Mazzy Star\, and Maggie Rogers. She has since shared stages with Matt Hartke (Recording Artist & Billboard Top 40 Platinum-Selling Songwriter)\, Troy Ramey (The Voice Top 12 contestant & Breaking Singer/Songwriter\, Apple Music)\, and more. All the while\, she has racked up more than 250K streams on streaming services. With her debut solo EP coming soon\, there’s a lot to be on the lookout for with this songstress!

SUMMARY:May 3: Halalisa! Celebrating Roots and Wings
DESCRIPTION:Boston-based world music vocal ensemble The Halalisa Singers led by artistic director Mary Cunningham presents “Halalisa! Celebrating Roots and Wings” on Saturday\, May 3\, 7:30 pm at First Parish of Lexington\, 7 Harrington Road\, Lexington\, MA. The celebratory concert honors Cunningham’s 20 years as artistic director and includes favorites from the ensemble’s repertoire plus a stirring selection of works new to the chorus. Joining the group are pianist Trevor Berens\, percussionist Bertram Lehmann\, and bass guitarist Benjamin Green. Tickets $25\, livestream $15 at https://halalisasingers.brownpapertickets.com. For more info\, email info@halalisa.org. \nThakadu will raise the roof in South African songs including the African prayer for peace “Ukuthula\,” traditional Sesotho hymns “Tshela Moya” and “Ke nna yo Morena\,” and the delightful South African folk song “Uma Ngihamba Naw\, Thuli\,” as well as Gloria Estefan’s “Reach\,” the official theme song of the 1996 Summer Olympics. \nAs part of the celebration of her 20 years with Halalisa\, Cunningham takes center stage as soloist in her own arrangement of Eva Cassidy’s gorgeous rendition of the hymn “How Can I Keep from Singing?” \nAndrew-John Bethke’s “Graduation Song” opens by proclaiming “Halalisa!\,” the Zulu world for “celebration.” The Halalisa “Top Ten” features staples from the chorus’s history including “Freedom Is Coming\,” “Peace Salaam Shalom\,” “Hava Nashira\,” “Now Let Us Sing\,” “Never Turning Back\,” “Guide My Feet\,” “For the Beauty of the Earth\,” “Peace Be With You Always\,” and Mystic Chorale founder Nick Page’s “Gwaza Universe.” \nPage is also represented by the shape note-inspired “Lights Upon Our Souls.” Former Halalisa audiences may recognize Sweet Honey in the Rock’s Ysaye M. Barnwell’s dynamic call to action “Hope\,” Kirby Shaw’s uplifting arrangement of “Bridge Over Troubled Water\,” the title tune “Roots and Wings” by Linda Hirschorn\, and Brian Tate’s joyful a cappella “We Sing\,” commissioned by Halalisa in 2014. \nNewer repertoire includes Linda Spevacek’s “Always Something Sings” set to text by Ralph Waldo Emerson\, and Kim Andre Arnesen’s lush “Flight Song.” The high voices of Halalisa are featured in Hirschorn’s wondrously winding round “I Have a Million Nightingales\,” while the low voices regale the audience with the classic favorite “Stand By Me.”

SUMMARY:Book Chat on American Inheritance by Edward J Larson
DESCRIPTION:New attention from historians and journalists is raising pointed questions about the founding period: was the American Revolution waged to preserve slavery\, and was the Constitution a pact with slavery or a landmark in the antislavery movement? Leaders of the Founding who called for American liberty are scrutinized for enslaving Black people themselves: George Washington consistently refused to recognize the freedom of those who escaped his Mount Vernon plantation. And we have long needed a history of the founding that fully includes Black Americans in the Revolutionary protests\, the war\, and the debates over slavery and freedom that followed. Join us in a group discussion to dive deeper into the contradictions of our founding.\n\n$10 Historical Society members\, $15 nonmembers\n\nPlease note that due to construction at the Depot\, Book Chats for the 2024-25 season will take place in the archives and Research Center at Munroe Tavern.

SUMMARY:Maxima Book Center Presents QUEEN BESS: A Tudor Comes to Save America
DESCRIPTION:–In-conversation event with novelist Maria Vetrano features Melissa Ludtke\, pioneer in sports journalism and author of Locker Room Talk \nWhat’s the best way to rescue American democracy? Imagine a near future in which a female tech billionaire with a social conscience launches an audacious plan to rescue America—and her company—from the despotic president of the United States\, and you have Maria Vetrano’s debut novel\, QUEEN BESS: A Tudor Comes to Save America (10/15/24 by Regalo Press). Sounds so implausible\, right? Except that some of the plot points in QUEEN BESS have already come true. \nVetrano will explore her satirical Sci-Fi fantasy with Melissa Ludtke\, an award-winning journalist and author of Locker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside (8/16/24 Rutgers University Press)\, on May 13\, 2025\, at 7:00 p.m. at Maxima Book Center in Lexington\, Mass. \nQUEEN BESS introduces readers to Dakota Wynfred\, a tech billionaire with a social conscience who lives in Cambridge and works in Charlestown. Dakota is convinced that the only way to save American democracy—and her cybersecurity company—from the US president who is setting fire to the Constitution is to enlist a time-traveling Elizabeth Tudor. The action races ahead as Dakota and her hand-picked cohorts prepare Elizabeth for a 2028 presidential run. \n“What if a brilliant\, battle-tested\, and socially astute leader—who just happens to have lived more than four centuries ago—were our best candidate for president because she could view twenty-first-century US politics from a completely fresh perspective?” said Maria Vetrano. “That person would be Elizabeth Tudor\, who ruled England for forty-five years by masterfully managing conflicting religious and political interests. \n“In our near future\, Elizabeth would rely on her experience to govern capably\, despite the maelstrom of partisan politics in which she would find herself. That premise—as well as Elizabeth’s drive to improve the quality of life for her people\, so they would love her above all the presidents in history—makes her a formidable power-player unlike any other\,” Vetrano said. \n“With deft storytelling\, novelist Maria Vetrano beckons us to suspend our skepticism about time travel as she transports us into Tudor England\, and then\, in the delightful company of the time-traveled Queen Elizabeth\, aka ‘Bess\,’ she sweeps us into the swirl of our 2027 presidential campaign\,” said author Melissa Ludtke. “While our current political reality in America is fraught with peril\, Vetrano’s political commentary is bold\, funny\, and ultimately optimistic.” \nAbout Maxima Book Center \nFounded in 2021\, Maxima Book Center is located at 1717 Mass. Ave.\, Lexington\, Mass. For more information\, visit https://www.maximacenter.com/ or call: (781) 457-6185. \nAbout QUEEN BESS: A Tudor Comes to Save America \nQUEEN BESS is published in print and eBook versions by Regalo Press\, a firm that unites philanthropy with the business of book publishing\, by making a donation to a charity of the author’s choice on every deal. At Vetrano’s request\, Regalo Press has made a charitable donation to Massachusetts-based Silent Spring Institute\, an independent research organization dedicated to uncovering the environmental causes of breast cancer. \nThe audiobook version of QUEEN BESS is published by Tantor Audio.
