SUMMARY:League of Women Voters of Lexington - First Friday (January 5\, 2024)
DESCRIPTION:League of Women Voters of Lexington\nFirst Friday January 5\, 2024\nCary Memorial Library\nBook Banning in Lexington\, Massachusetts: Can It Happen Here? \nAcross the country and locally\, there are concerns about book banning as members of local groups\, school boards\, and libraries seek to limit access to books in classrooms and libraries. Can It Happen Here? That is the topic for the LWV First Friday on January 5\, 2024. \nThe program takes place from 9:30 to 11:00 AM at the Cary Memorial Library located at 1874 Massachusetts Avenue\, Lexington\, MA 02420. This program has been developed in response to the national and local controversy. Please note that this program will take place in the large meeting room at the Cary Library\, not at the Community Center. \nThese concerns in Lexington are not new. In 2005 a Lexington parent staged a campaign about a related issue. A group\, Lexington CARES\, Lexington Community Action for Responsible Education\, was formed at the time. More recently the Serious Talk curriculum conversation has been introduced in the Lexington schools. \nOur program will include several speakers led by library director Koren Stembridge and Lexington School Committee member Kathleen M Lenihan. \nThis program is the fourth in the 2023-2024 LWV First Friday Forum series hosted by the League of Women Voters to promote awareness and understanding of public policy issues. There will be time for Q&A after the program. \nFor more information about the League and this program go to https://my.lwv.org/massachusetts/lexington. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization dedicated to the principles of self-government as established in the Constitution of the United States. The League works to promote political responsibility through the informed and active participation of citizens in government. For more information\, contact the League convener Margaret Coppe at mecoppe@gmail.com \nAll Lexington League forums are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:A Joyful Noyse performs Charpentier's Midnight Mass for Christmas
DESCRIPTION:A Joyful Noyse performs Messe de Minuit pour Nöel by Marc-Antione Charpentier at Hancock Church! On Sunday\, January 7 at 2:00pm\, early music ensemble A Joyful Noyse will take us back to 1694 with one of Charpentier’s most exceptional works! \nWhat is so unique and remarkable about this mass is Charpentier’s use of French Christmas carols. Folk melodies and carols had been used in numerous works by other composers\, but only as the bricks and mortar with which they constructed their compositions. Here Charpentier uses no fewer than ten carols throughout the mass. They are no longer just building blocks. Their spirit of joy\, simplicity and charm become the life blood and essence of the mass. \nThis concert is at Hancock Church\, 1912 Mass. Ave. in Lexington\, MA. Entry is a suggested donation of $15. For more details\, please contact Hancock Church at (781) 862-4220 or Office@HancockChurch.org\, or go to www.hancockchurch.org/ajn.

SUMMARY:The Concord Orchestra presents "Spanish Passions & Nordic Vistas"
DESCRIPTION:The Concord Orchestra\, directed by guest conductor Robert Lehmann\, performs a program of Georges Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1\, Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole\, and Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 3. Charles Dimmick is the violin soloist for Symphonie Espagnole. \nViolinist Charles Dimmick enjoys a varied and distinguished career as a concertmaster\, soloist\, and chamber musician. Praised by the Boston Globe for his “cool clarity of expression\,” Charles is one of New England’s most sought-after orchestral musicians. He is co-concertmaster of the Boston Pops Esplanade and concertmaster of both the Portland Symphony and the Rhode Island Philharmonic. In the summers\, Charles can be found serving as the concertmaster of the New Hampshire Music Festival. Charles has appeared as guest concertmaster for the Arizona Music Fest and the Winston-Salem Symphony. A frequent soloist\, Charles has garnered praise\, packed houses\, and received standing ovations for what the Portland Press Herald has called his “luxurious and stellar performances” and his “technical and artistic virtuosity.” \nConductor Robert Lehmann is Professor of Music and Director of Strings Studies and Orchestral Activities at the University of Southern Maine School of Music where he conducts the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his duties at USM\, he is the Music Director of the North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra and the White Mountain Bach Festival in New Hampshire. \nThe orchestra performs two Spanish-themed pieces by French composers: George Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1 and Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole. Both pieces premiered in 1875. The Lalo was originally composed for the Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. The Carmen Suite No. 1 includes some of the most familiar tunes from the popular opera. \nFinnish composer Jean Sibelius’ music is inspired by the lakes and forests of his native country\, the long winter nights\, and the endless summer days when the sun never sets. Finnish folk music also influenced his music\, as demonstrated by the dance rhythm at the beginning of the first movement of Symphony No. 3\, as well as the lovely slow melody in the second movement. Audiences in 1907 when the work premiered\, who expected music more like his romantic Symphony No. 2\, were surprised by Sibelius’ relatively restrained third symphony. \nTickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free. For tickets and information\, call 978-369-4967 or visit www.concordorchestra.com.

SUMMARY:Halalisa Singers - Be the Change: Songs of Courage and Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:Boston-based world music vocal ensemble The Halalisa Singers led by artistic director Mary Cunningham presents Be the Change: Songs of Courage and Inspiration on Saturday\, January 27\, 7:30 pm at First Parish of Arlington\, 630 Massachusetts Avenue\, Arlington\, MA. The group is joined by pianist Trevor Berens\, percussionist Bertram Lehmann\, and soprano soloist Jessica Tunick Berens. Tickets are available for $25 at www.halalisa.org. For more information\, email info@halalisa.org. \nBe the Change presents music exploring the legacies of important change agents such as Mahatma Gandhi\, Martin Luther King Jr.\, Bob Dylan\, James Weldon Johnson\, and Naomi Judd. The show features music by composers of color from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds \nIndonesian composer Ken Steven’s arrangement of the Indonesian folk song “Hela Rotan” tells of the traditional game of tug of war played by the people of Maluku\, which upends our usual notions of competition by focusing on cooperation and togetherness rather than winners and losers. Rousing arrangements and reworkings of traditional spirituals by two African-American composers\, Rollo Dilworth (“Let Me Fly”) and Dr. Brandon A. Boyd (“Sign Me Up”)\, use biblical references to convey messages of hope\, community\, and freedom. The energetic “TaReKita\,” written by Indian-American composer Reena Esmail for a choir comprised of homeless individuals\, uses onomatopoeic vocal sounds to imitate the Indian drum or tabla. Gene Glickman’s arrangement of Chilean composer Sergio Ortega Alvarado’s protest song “El Pueblo Unido (The People United)” stresses the triumph that can be achieved through unity. African-American composer Marques L.A. Garrett’s gorgeous choral piece “My Heart Be Brave” uses the words of civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson to deliver a stunning message of courage and perseverance during dark times. In the composer’s words\, “In the midst of discrimination\, our heart—the core of our being—must lead us into rightful change.” \nPopular music can also produce powerful music of change\, and there’s no better example than “The Times They Are A’Changin’\,” written by Bob Dylan as an anthem of change during the turbulent sixties. The harmonic and stylistic elements of Adam Podd’s arrangement add new poignancy to the timeless classic. The Judds hit “Love Can Build a Bridge” is presented via Kirby Shaw’s arrangement of the emotionally moving song about unity and togetherness in the face of trouble. \nSoprano section leader and accomplished coloratura Jessica Tunick Berens will be joined by her husband\, Halalisa accompanist Trevor Berens\, for a set of inspiring tunes including “Children Will Listen” from Into The Woods by Stephen Sondheim and “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught” from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific. Jessica also sings an exquisite extended solo in beloved choral master Nick Page’s “Choose to Bless the World\,” which urges us to use our own personal power in positive ways. \nThe program also features Elizabeth Norton’s arrangement of Shlomo Carlbach’s “Return Again / Hashivenu (Return Us)\,” which interweaves two songs with themes of resilience and renewal; Troy Robertson’s djembe-accompanied “In Meeting We Are Blessed;” Sten Kallman’s arrangement of traditional Haitian folk song “Wangol” sung in Haitian Creole; and the concert’s title song\, Laura Farnell’s “Be the Change\,” which adapts texts from Ghandi\, Martin Luther King Jr.\, the Bible\, original lyrics\, and “This Little Light of Mine.”

SUMMARY:John Quincy Adams: Reluctant Abolitionist\, at the Lexington Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:As a Harvard alumnus\, diplomat\, U.S. President\, member of Congress and attorney before the Supreme Court\, John Quincy Adams had a unique relationship with slavery. Prickly and curmudgeonly\, he danced with abolitionists\, but never became one himself. However\, Adams did harbor an intense hatred for the arguments of Southern slaveholders\, and eventually found himself in the center of America’s greatest struggle. \nInformed by Adams’ revealing and often tormented musings from his vast diary\, hear from local historian Jeffrey Denman as he weaves a unique and gripping account of John Quincy Adams’ battle with slavery\, while exploring the many fault lines in American society that led to the Civil War. Included are the dramatic showdowns in the House of Representatives and Supreme Court\, as well as Adams’ attempts at outsmarting Southern politicians and his efforts to keep slavery at the forefront of Congressional activities. \nCopies of Denman’s new book\, John Quincy Adams: Reluctant Abolitionist\, will be available for sale. \n$10 Lexington Historical Society members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:White Lotus: A Live Musical Performance with the film “The Goddess”
DESCRIPTION:Composer\, vocalist\, and instrumentalist Min Xiao-Fen is one of the world’s leading performers on the pipa\, the stringed lute that has been an integral part of Eastern musical culture for millennia. Her latest album\, White Lotus\, engages with a relatively more recent art form\, presenting a reimagined soundtrack to director Wu Yonggang’s 1934 silent film The Goddess. In a duet with the innovative guitarist Rez Abbasi\, Min infuses spirited life and soulful nuance into actress Ruan Lingyu’s iconic but still controversial film portrait. Min will employ an array of traditional Chinese instrumentation and her exquisite voice to live score an English language-subtitled screening of this screen gem\, considered one of the best-known films of China’s cinematic golden age.
