SUMMARY:Deck the Halls: Female Abolitionists and Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Ken Turino\, of Historic New England\, will discuss how New England’s female abolitionists in the first half of the nineteenth century played a large role in the development of modern American Christmas traditions. \nThese abolitionists\, led by Maria Chapman\, hosted anti-slavery society Christmas Fairs – one of the earliest traditions associated with Christmas. It was at these fairs that most Americans in the first half of the nineteenth century encountered a Christmas tree. These fairs had a wide-ranging influence on our current customs\, including the use of greenery in decorating and gift-giving in America. \nWomen\, including Lexington’s own Julia and Ellen Robbins\, promoted abolitionism while creating goods for sale as well as organizing the fairs. This helped move women out of the designated domestic sphere of the home (not without controversy) and into the economy. All of this would forever change the role of women in society and how we celebrate Christmas. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Lexington Lyceum Advocates and LexSeeHer.

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Experience
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, December 22\, 2023\, First Parish in Lexington will present a Winter Solstice Experience at 7:30 pm. With music\, ritual\, candles\, dancing\, and darkness\, we will experience the quiet of the longest night\, and welcome the sun as we wait for her return. Led by Rev. Anne Mason\, with Minister of Music Rip Jackson\, this event will be a mystical experience exploring earth-centered imagery\, with an invitation to cherish the darkness. You are invited to set aside your frenetic everyday concerns and take this hour for your own inward journey. The solstice is honored by indigenous religions worldwide\, and we will have music\, dance\, and poetry that honor many of these traditions. A group of intergenerational dancers will weave movement and ritual to celebrate the peace of the darkest night of the year and the triumphant return of the sun’s nourishing light. The musicians will include vocal soloists Chelsea Cannon\, Liz Savir\, and Natalie Brierre\, soprano sax player Katie Runde Sanchez\, along with guitar\, electric bass\, piano\, electronic synthesizer\, drums\, rain stick\, gong\, Tibetan singing bowl\, and other atmospheric musical instruments. They will sing music from diverse genres\, including Paul Winter\, Loreena McKennitt\, Enya\, and original music by Rip Jackson. A free-will offering will be taken and public parking will be provided in the church’s rear. For more information call 781-862-8200 or visit www.fplex.org.

SUMMARY:League of Women Voters of Lexington - First Friday (January 5\, 2024)
DESCRIPTION:League of Women Voters of Lexington\nFirst Friday January 5\, 2024\nCary Memorial Library\nBook Banning in Lexington\, Massachusetts: Can It Happen Here? \nAcross the country and locally\, there are concerns about book banning as members of local groups\, school boards\, and libraries seek to limit access to books in classrooms and libraries. Can It Happen Here? That is the topic for the LWV First Friday on January 5\, 2024. \nThe program takes place from 9:30 to 11:00 AM at the Cary Memorial Library located at 1874 Massachusetts Avenue\, Lexington\, MA 02420. This program has been developed in response to the national and local controversy. Please note that this program will take place in the large meeting room at the Cary Library\, not at the Community Center. \nThese concerns in Lexington are not new. In 2005 a Lexington parent staged a campaign about a related issue. A group\, Lexington CARES\, Lexington Community Action for Responsible Education\, was formed at the time. More recently the Serious Talk curriculum conversation has been introduced in the Lexington schools. \nOur program will include several speakers led by library director Koren Stembridge and Lexington School Committee member Kathleen M Lenihan. \nThis program is the fourth in the 2023-2024 LWV First Friday Forum series hosted by the League of Women Voters to promote awareness and understanding of public policy issues. There will be time for Q&A after the program. \nFor more information about the League and this program go to https://my.lwv.org/massachusetts/lexington. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization dedicated to the principles of self-government as established in the Constitution of the United States. The League works to promote political responsibility through the informed and active participation of citizens in government. For more information\, contact the League convener Margaret Coppe at mecoppe@gmail.com \nAll Lexington League forums are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:A Joyful Noyse performs Charpentier's Midnight Mass for Christmas
DESCRIPTION:A Joyful Noyse performs Messe de Minuit pour Nöel by Marc-Antione Charpentier at Hancock Church! On Sunday\, January 7 at 2:00pm\, early music ensemble A Joyful Noyse will take us back to 1694 with one of Charpentier’s most exceptional works! \nWhat is so unique and remarkable about this mass is Charpentier’s use of French Christmas carols. Folk melodies and carols had been used in numerous works by other composers\, but only as the bricks and mortar with which they constructed their compositions. Here Charpentier uses no fewer than ten carols throughout the mass. They are no longer just building blocks. Their spirit of joy\, simplicity and charm become the life blood and essence of the mass. \nThis concert is at Hancock Church\, 1912 Mass. Ave. in Lexington\, MA. Entry is a suggested donation of $15. For more details\, please contact Hancock Church at (781) 862-4220 or Office@HancockChurch.org\, or go to www.hancockchurch.org/ajn.
