SUMMARY:Creating Landscapes for Bird Diversity with Claudia Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Our landscapes have a tremendous impact on bird diversity\, and with so many native bird populations in steep decline\, understanding their needs is more important than ever. \nUsing photographs and her urban garden as a case study\, Claudia will explore the essential principles for creating avian friendly landscapes for a wide variety of landbird species — from songbirds\, to owls\, woodpeckers\, and more. Native plants provide the foundation\, with healthy flora-fauna relationships that are essential for food and habitat. Also important is the structure of the landscape itself\, so that it offers varied canopy layers\, protective cover\, and water. Finally\, she will consider the pros and cons of our human interactions with birds\, using birdfeeders and nest boxes\, and through the design of our built environment. Every landscape matters and each of us can make a difference! \nClaudia Thompson founded Grow Native Massachusetts in 2010 and served as the organization’s President and Executive Director through its first decade\, simultaneously becoming recognized nationally as a leader in the native plant movement.

SUMMARY:Sol y Canto performs at Lexington's Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Sol y Canto is the award winning Pan-Latin ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist\, singer and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions\, Sol y Canto is known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences of all ages. \nSol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic\, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance\, laugh\, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. With Brian’s commanding\, intricate guitar playing\, Rosi’s rhythmic drive on cajón and bongos\, and liberal use of vocal improvisation\, the duo often sounds like a much larger ensemble. \nSince 1994\, Sol y Canto has brought audiences to their feet from the Kennedy Center to the California World Music Festival\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte and the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, as well as countless club shows and house concerts. The Boston Globe hails them as “sublime ambassadors of the Pan-Latin tradition”. Music critic Norman Weinstein of the Christian Science Monitor and Boston Phoenix observes:\n“Every Sol y Canto album is a demonstration of what the poet Federico García Lorca identified as deep song. Always they evoke the sensual splendor of simply being vitally\, vividly alive in a magical and mysterious universe. Brian Amador is a Spanish modernist poet in the guise of a musician…Together\, Rosi and Brian Amador create a musical marriage made in heaven.” \nNicolás Emden is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, singer and songwriter\, originally from Chilean Patagonia. His music navigates the waters of pop\, rock\, and Latin American folk. \nNicolás was a former member and founder of the Chilean band “Tejado Pimiento” (2007-2012) with whom he wrote 2 studio albums\, “Triciclo” (2007) and “Sensación de verdad” (2010). After that\, he published his first solo album named “Como los pájaros” (2014)\, which included a YouTube documentary series traveling and performing throughout Chile called “Como los pájaros x Chile”. \nThe Chilean artist moved to Boston USA in 2014\, where he’s currently based\, to complete his music studies at Berklee College of Music. He’s also been performing and touring throughout the United States\, Canada\, and back to Chile.\nNicolás started his musical journey at the age of 6\, through the learning of folk South American music\, singing and playing the acoustic guitar. Since his school years\, Nicolás has been part of a wide variety of music projects as a multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, composer/songwriter\, and music director and orchestra conductor for professional musical theater shows. He has also written the music for 2 original musical theater shows\, based on traditional South American stories and mythology. His newest single\, Sin Ti is available for streaming on Spotify and YouTube\, among others.

SUMMARY:Citizens for Lexington Conservation Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual meeting and hear Barbara Katzenberg\, a Lexingtoninan\, talk about “Observing Lexington’s Biodiversity Using iNaturalist.” In the past few years\, applications to help people identify organisms have proliferated using various forms of AI capability. The non-profit iNaturalist has the added benefit of bringing together an international community of naturalists–both amateur and professional– who contribute by confirming identifications\, discussing findings\, and creating projects and teaching materials using its content. Barbara Katzenberg has been documenting plant life in Lexington in iNaturalist since 2021 and to date has identified 498 wild species\, primarily in our conservation lands.\nIn this talk she will demonstrate the use of iNaturalist\, including tips to get started\, and show some of her findings\, including images of Lexington’s two pawpaw groves as they appear at different times of the year. There will be a handout to help people get started.\nThe presentation will be preceded by a short business meeting and refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Carols & Cocoa for a Cause at Pilgrim!
DESCRIPTION:Pilgrim Church’s Carols & Cocoa for a Cause returns for a second year! This gathering is a great way to support a community in need – East End House in Cambridge – while having Christmas fun. We’ll gather on the lawn around an undecorated Christmas Tree. Please bring new mittens\, scarves\, hats\, gloves\, or toys (for children up to age 13). These offerings will decorate the tree as we sing! \nChoir Director Max Evrard will lead the crowd in singing fun traditional Christmas Carols\, and there will be hot cocoa to keep us warm. Last year there was also quite a lot of dancing! Inclement weather? We will move to our community room indoors. This event is handicapped accessible. “What’s better than carol singing with neighbors and friends?” said Rev. Reebee Kavich Girash. “Join us for this sweet time.”

SUMMARY:Deck the Halls: Female Abolitionists and Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Ken Turino\, of Historic New England\, will discuss how New England’s female abolitionists in the first half of the nineteenth century played a large role in the development of modern American Christmas traditions. \nThese abolitionists\, led by Maria Chapman\, hosted anti-slavery society Christmas Fairs – one of the earliest traditions associated with Christmas. It was at these fairs that most Americans in the first half of the nineteenth century encountered a Christmas tree. These fairs had a wide-ranging influence on our current customs\, including the use of greenery in decorating and gift-giving in America. \nWomen\, including Lexington’s own Julia and Ellen Robbins\, promoted abolitionism while creating goods for sale as well as organizing the fairs. This helped move women out of the designated domestic sphere of the home (not without controversy) and into the economy. All of this would forever change the role of women in society and how we celebrate Christmas. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Lexington Lyceum Advocates and LexSeeHer.
