SUMMARY:Animal Joy: The Serious Nature of Laughter with Nuar Asadir
DESCRIPTION:Animal Joy is an ode to spontaneity and feeling alive. In her invigorating\, continuously surprising book about the serious nature of laughter\, Alsadir ranges from her experience in clown school\, Anna Karenina’s morphine addiction\, Freud’s un-Freudian behaviors\, marriage brokers and war brokers\, to “Not Jokes\,” laugh tracks\, the problem with adjectives\, and how poetry can wake us up. At the center of the book\, however\, is the author’s relationship with her daughters\, who erupt into the text like sudden\, unexpected laughter. These interventions are like tiny revolutions\, pointedly showing the dangers of being severed from one’s true self and hinting at ways one might be called back to it. \nNuar Alsadir is a poet\, nonfiction writer\, and psychoanalyst. She is the author of Animal Joy; Fourth Person Singular\, which was shortlisted for the 2017 Forward Prize for Best Collection in England and in Ireland and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry; and More Shadow Than Bird. Her poems and essays have appeared in numerous publications\, including The Paris Review\, Granta\, New York Times Magazine\, Slate\, Kenyon Review\, and Ploughshares. She appears on Showtime’s docuseries\, Couples Therapy\, as one of the psychoanalysts in the peer supervision group\, in the third\, fourth and fifth seasons. She lives in New York City\, where she works as a psychoanalyst in private practice.

SUMMARY:League of Women Voters Lexington First Friday
DESCRIPTION:League of Women Voters of Lexington \nFirst Friday November 3\, 2023 \nMeet Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan \nHear DA Ryan discuss her work as DA and the challenge of misinformation/disinformation in these difficult times. \nAcross the country\, and in our state\, there is a new understanding of the importance of local and statewide elected offices in shaping government and preserving our democracy. This is especially true of the office of District Attorney here in Massachusetts and across the land. \nThe next League of Women Voters\, Lexington First Friday program will take place on Friday November 3\, 2023\, 9:30 AM\, at the Lexington Community Center\, 39 Marrett Road\, Lexington\, MA 02421. \nThe program will introduce Middlesex DA Marian Ryan and highlight her important work serving the largest county in New England\, covering 54 cities and towns. The office represents Massachusetts in many cases in 11 district courts\, 4 juvenile courts\, and 2 superior courts located throughout the county. \nDistrict Attorney Marian Ryan is well known for her innovative work confronting racial injustice\, reducing unfair judicial practices\, addressing the opioid crisis\, supporting immigration\, and pioneering restorative justice—among her many priorities and accomplishments. During her tenure\, the DA Office has created many of the best-in-class crime prevention programs as well as a Cold Case Unit that has delivered justice and answers in decades’-old crimes. But recently DA Marian Ryan has set out to confront one of the most challenging problems of our time: the rise in disinformation/misinformation and the challenge to young and old to fact check information and differentiate truth from falsehood. “If we lose the ability to accept objective facts\,” she said “it eats away at our democracy.” District Attorney Ryan grew up in Somerville and is a summa cum laude graduate of Emmanuel College and a cum laude graduate of Boston College Law School. \nThis program is the third in the 2023-2024 LWV First Friday Forum series hosted by the League of Women Voters to promote awareness and understanding of public policy issues. There will be time for Q&A after the program. \nFor more information about the League and this program go to https://my.lwv.org/massachusetts.lexington.\nThe League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization dedicated to the principles of self-government established in the Constitution of the United States. The League works to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government. For more information\, contact the League convener Margaret Coppe at mecoppe@gmail.com. \nAll Lexington League forums are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Creating Landscapes for Bird Diversity with Claudia Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Our landscapes have a tremendous impact on bird diversity\, and with so many native bird populations in steep decline\, understanding their needs is more important than ever. \nUsing photographs and her urban garden as a case study\, Claudia will explore the essential principles for creating avian friendly landscapes for a wide variety of landbird species — from songbirds\, to owls\, woodpeckers\, and more. Native plants provide the foundation\, with healthy flora-fauna relationships that are essential for food and habitat. Also important is the structure of the landscape itself\, so that it offers varied canopy layers\, protective cover\, and water. Finally\, she will consider the pros and cons of our human interactions with birds\, using birdfeeders and nest boxes\, and through the design of our built environment. Every landscape matters and each of us can make a difference! \nClaudia Thompson founded Grow Native Massachusetts in 2010 and served as the organization’s President and Executive Director through its first decade\, simultaneously becoming recognized nationally as a leader in the native plant movement.

SUMMARY:Staying Curious and in Community When the Conversation is Tough: An Interactive Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Many of us have the experience of being pulled into arguments that feel destructive to our relationships and not helpful to understanding others or feeling understood. This interactive workshop will help you notice and disrupt destructive patterns and find ways to stay curious and connected in your community. \nThe workshop will be led by John Sarrouf\, Co-Director of Essential Partners and a panelist at the Oct. 24 Community Conversation on civil discourse\, and Maggie Herzig\, Sr. Associate Emerita of Essential Partners. The workshop sponsored by the Lexington Lyceum Advocates. \nPlease visit the Lexington Lyceum Advocates website (lexlyceum.org/events) to register.

SUMMARY:Sol y Canto performs at Lexington's Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Sol y Canto is the award winning Pan-Latin ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist\, singer and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions\, Sol y Canto is known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences of all ages. \nSol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic\, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance\, laugh\, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. With Brian’s commanding\, intricate guitar playing\, Rosi’s rhythmic drive on cajón and bongos\, and liberal use of vocal improvisation\, the duo often sounds like a much larger ensemble. \nSince 1994\, Sol y Canto has brought audiences to their feet from the Kennedy Center to the California World Music Festival\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte and the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, as well as countless club shows and house concerts. The Boston Globe hails them as “sublime ambassadors of the Pan-Latin tradition”. Music critic Norman Weinstein of the Christian Science Monitor and Boston Phoenix observes:\n“Every Sol y Canto album is a demonstration of what the poet Federico García Lorca identified as deep song. Always they evoke the sensual splendor of simply being vitally\, vividly alive in a magical and mysterious universe. Brian Amador is a Spanish modernist poet in the guise of a musician…Together\, Rosi and Brian Amador create a musical marriage made in heaven.” \nNicolás Emden is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, singer and songwriter\, originally from Chilean Patagonia. His music navigates the waters of pop\, rock\, and Latin American folk. \nNicolás was a former member and founder of the Chilean band “Tejado Pimiento” (2007-2012) with whom he wrote 2 studio albums\, “Triciclo” (2007) and “Sensación de verdad” (2010). After that\, he published his first solo album named “Como los pájaros” (2014)\, which included a YouTube documentary series traveling and performing throughout Chile called “Como los pájaros x Chile”. \nThe Chilean artist moved to Boston USA in 2014\, where he’s currently based\, to complete his music studies at Berklee College of Music. He’s also been performing and touring throughout the United States\, Canada\, and back to Chile.\nNicolás started his musical journey at the age of 6\, through the learning of folk South American music\, singing and playing the acoustic guitar. Since his school years\, Nicolás has been part of a wide variety of music projects as a multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, composer/songwriter\, and music director and orchestra conductor for professional musical theater shows. He has also written the music for 2 original musical theater shows\, based on traditional South American stories and mythology. His newest single\, Sin Ti is available for streaming on Spotify and YouTube\, among others.
