SUMMARY:Cary Lecture Series Presents: Cultivating Changemakers: Defending Democratic Education Today
DESCRIPTION:Education is an essential component of a healthy democracy. Nearly 400 years ago\, Massachusetts opened our country’s first public school. But today public education is under threat. Yet educators continue to innovate\, collaborate and advocate. Join two award-winning Massachusetts teachers to discuss the state of education and learn about creative approaches to investing in students’ stories\, identities and voices. \nJessica Lander was recognized as 2023 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year while teaching history and civics to immigrant-origin students at Lowell High School. She is the author of Making Americans: Stories of Historic Struggles\, New Ideas\, and Inspiration in Immigrant Education. \nDr. De’Shawn Washington was named 2024 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year while teaching fourth grade in Lexington. As a national advocate and CEO of Cultivating Changemakers LLC\, he champions justice-driven education. \n

SUMMARY:8th Annual TriNethra - The Third Eye Festival of Dance
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2015 by renowned dancer and choreographer Jayshree Bala Rajamani\, TriNethra – The Third Eye Festival of Dance seeks to promote and preserve the rich classical dance traditions of India. Its very name reflects its vision — to open the audience’s “third eye” to the beauty\, depth and spiritual resonance of Indian dance. \nTriNethra creates an elegant\, meaningful and soulfully-uplifting space where dancers and audiences connect in a truly transformative experience. Artists are specially invited and compensated for their art\, honoring their dedication and ensuring that their work is valued. Over eight editions\, more than fifty celebrated artists from across the USA and abroad have graced its stage. \nThe festival has presented some of the most respected names in classical Indian dance — including Rama Vaidyanathan\, Roja Kannan\, Vaibhav Arekar\, and Dr. Kaberi Sen — as well as unique forms like Yakshagana\, featured in a special 2018 presentation. Audiences have experienced a diverse spectrum of dance traditions including Bharatanatyam\, Kathak\, Odissi\, Manipuri\, Mohiniyattam\, Kuchipudi\, Shilpa Natanam\, and innovative collaborative works by both local and international performers. \nA vital part of TriNethra’s mission is to offer young dancers in the U.S. — who have trained in these classical forms — an opportunity to perform beyond their Arangetram\, Rangapravesh\, or Manchpravesh\, giving them a platform to grow as artists and connect with wider audiences. \nHonored as a recipient of the Mass Cultural Council Festival Award for multiple years\, TriNethra is New England’s oldest and most celebrated classical Indian dance festival. With each edition\, it deepens the shared experience between dancer and audience — a moment of collective joy\, inspiration and awakening.

SUMMARY:Barbaby Bright at Harmony on the Green November 8th
DESCRIPTION:Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Concerts continues its fourth season with the Kansas City-based Barnaby Bright. Not easily defined\, Barnaby Bright is an alt-Americana trio with contemporary influences that reflect their geographical journey from Brooklyn to Nashville to Kansas\, while calling on Nathan’s Oklahoma roots and distant relation to Merle Haggard. The band has accumulated a dedicated following that feeds on their ability to spin storytelling into sonic treasures. A BB show will take audiences on a ride through love songs\, murder ballads and deeply moving\, relatable themes. The most commonly uttered phrase at the end of a show seems to be\, “that was a spiritual experience.” \nNathan’s virtuosic acoustic guitar & banjo-playing and Becky’s effortless soaring vocals over the drone of the harmonium are pushing the boundaries of today’s indie folk landscape. \nThe duo spent a decade touring and making records before recently adding Carmen Dieker to the band. The blend of their three-part harmonies and Carmen’s haunting fiddle and violin-playing add an element to shows that fans of the band never knew they had been wanting. \nBarnaby Bright received the grand prize at NYC’s prestigious Songwriter’s Circle\, were elected to Amazon’s Top 100 Albums of the Year\, and most recently\, their Christmas album was picked by The New York Times as one of the Top 20 Christmas Albums of the Year\, with five of the songs being featured in the Netflix hit TV show\, Sex/Life. \nWhile opening for illustrious acts such as Norah Jones and The Lumineers\, Barnaby Bright continues to mesmerize audiences and convert new followers one show at a time while raising awareness of Kansas City’s diverse landscape.
