SUMMARY:Declaring Independence Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. Across the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? Costumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. Rounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music!\n\nFREE!

They will communicate memories of colonial Massachusetts\, along with tales of resilience\, ingenuity\, emancipation\, and patriotism from the 18th and 19th centuries. \nBackground \nQuock Walker Day celebrates the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision of July 8\, 1783\, that found a White enslaver guilty of assault on Quock Walker\, a freedom-seeking Black man\, and agreed with Chief Justice Cushing that the ideas of slavery and perpetual servitude were incompatible with the state constitution. \nThe Quock Walker trials span from 1781 to 1783. In 1781\, Quock Walker\, a young man from Barre\, MA\, and of Akan and/or Ewe lineage\, filed a civil suit against Nathaniel Jennison for assault and battery. Mr. Walker was found by the jury to be free and was awarded 50 pounds. Following appeals and a criminal case\, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court found Jennison guilty of assault and agreed that the ideas of slavery and perpetual servitude were incompatible with the state constitution. \nMr. Walker’s fight through the legal system to safeguard his natural freedom resulted in the end of slavery in Massachusetts.

The Teen Ensemble will be led by Patty Cuyler\, Lonnie Norwood and Liam Kantor. These brilliant teen singers come from seven states\, Canada and France. Village Harmony\, a nonprofit umbrella organization based in Vermont\, promotes the study and performance of ethnic singing traditions from around the world. For more than thirty years\, they have organized teen ensembles each summer in New England and ensembles for mixed-age and adult singers in numerous foreign countries. Each Village Harmony ensemble develops its own unique sound with a different team of leaders. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the 242nd Anniversary of Massachusetts Emancipation Day\, aka Quock Walker Day \nQuock Walker was enslaved in Barre\, MA. His 1781 civil lawsuit for battery led to the 1783 criminal case that ended slavery in Massachusetts. Venus Roe was enslaved by Jonas Roe in Lexington. At about three years old\, she was gifted to Smitheren Reed of Woburn District. Venus Roe was emancipated in the wake of the third Quock Walker case\, Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Nathaniel Jennison. \nJoin the Association of Black Citizens of Lexington (ABCL) and Cary Library for a virtual screening of the Venus Roe episode of the Black Patriots of Lexington YouTube series\, a co-production of ABCL\, LexMedia and Tricons 2 Red Tails. The Black Patriots of Lexington is a nine-part series where Sean D. Osborne has conversations with acclaimed historians\, reenactors and educators to provide insights into 11 Black patriots who played significant roles in the American Revolution. Five of those patriots were active combatants on April 19\, 1775. Three of those soldiers were Lexington residents\, and two were Afro-Indigenous soldiers from Natick who fired on retreating British Regulars near the Lexington Green. \nIn the Venus Roe episode\, public historian Margaret Micholet and curator Stacey Fraser present the unique viewpoint of Venus Roe\, who was an enslaved servant at the home of Smitheren Reed and Captain James Reed of Woburn District (now Burlington). On April 19\, 1775\, the Reed home sheltered John Hancock and Samuel Adams and served as a temporary prison for up to twelve British Regulars. \nA Q&A will follow with Stacey Fraser\, Margaret Micholet and Sean D. Osborne. \nRegistration is required. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Association of Black Citizens of Lexington (ABCL).

You will follow in the footsteps of Paul Revere as you walk the rooms of the Hancock-Clarke House\, one of Revere’s stops during his now-famous Midnight Ride. Learn about the troop movements of the Lexington Militia and the British Regulars as you visit Buckman Tavern\, Lexington Common (site of the Battle of Lexington)\, and Munroe Tavern. Come see what life was like for Lexingtonians in the 18th Century!\n\nFor rising 3rd – 6th graders.\n\nThis year\, choose from July 14 – 18\, or August 18 – 22\, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm daily.\n\nPricing\n$275 per child for members\, $350 per child for nonmembers. A $100 non-refundable deposit is required per child to reserve their spot.\n\nReservations will open at 12:00 am on February 1.\n\nSince children will be dropped off for this program\, a LHS Children’s Program Participation Form is required.

She will then discuss how certain members of the Robbins family of East Lexington lived lives that broke these norms. Julia Robbins pursued her own career as an artist and carpet designer and married late. Hannah Maria Robbins\, Julia’s older sister\, who was deaf\, remained with her family her entire life at a time when many families relegated disabled\, mentally ill\, or LGBTQ+ individuals to asylums. Lot Robbins\, the uncle of Julia and Hannah Maria\, was committed to the asylum for the mentally ill that became McLean Hospital.\n\n\n\nWhat made Julia\, Hannah Maria\, and Lot’s lives different from the lives of their peers? And how was their unorthodoxy representative  of greater social attitudes at the time? We invite you to join us in exploring these questions.
