Recent high school graduates and Youth STEAM Initiative alumni will share honest\, practical advice about college applications\, college life\, academic exploration\, and different paths after high school.  \nThe event is designed for students and families with a wide range of goals and academic backgrounds. We will ask recently graduated seniors and alumni of the Youth STEAM Initiative questions about their experiences in high school and after. In this panel\, they will share what they’ve done and what they wish they might have done differently over the past few years. Through this diverse cast of experiences\, we hope attendees will get to know our panelists and listen to the many perspectives and pieces of advice they have. \nThe panel will feature recent graduates Yuanheng Mao of Belmont High School\, who plans to study Government or Economics and Computer Science at Harvard University. Lillian Yang of Lexington High School will study Neuroscience on the pre-medical track at UCLA. Jerry Xu of Lexington High School will study Computer Science and Molecular Biology or Mathematics at MIT. \nYouth STEAM Initiative alumni will also share perspectives from their experiences in college and beyond. Audi Lin is a Carnegie Mellon University student studying computer science with a minor in robotics. Baoren Liu is a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign student studying Computer Science and Mathematics after transferring from Northeastern University. Isabel Li is a Harvard University student studying Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology and History of Science. Eli Olcott began studying computer science and philosophy at Harvard but stepped away for 18 months to join Sapien as its first employee and Head of Customer Engineering\, and is now returning to Harvard to complete his studies. \nStudents and families are encouraged to attend and bring questions. Similar to last year\, students will showcase their imagination by creating a short film that will be shown to family and friends at the end of the week. Under the guidance of our skilled staff\, students will learn the basics of acting\, improvisation\, and camera skills in order to bring their visions to life both during the class and in future endeavors. \nThe action-packed week cultivates the students’ creativity in a positive environment and allows them to explore their creative potential. The culmination of their effort premieres at a celebratory party with family\, friends\, and popcorn! \nAs part of the class\, every child will learn about a Sony PXW x70 camera\, tripods\, boom mics\, lighting\, the green screen\, as well as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro editing software. There will also be an opportunity for them to create their own project\, either solo or with other campers. \nThe class runs from Monday\, August 10th to Friday\, August 14th from 10:00 am (drop-off as early as 9:00 am) to 3:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Peter Mulvey and Jenna Nicholls Present: Floyd Mercantile
DESCRIPTION:In April 2025\, Peter Mulvey and Jenna Nicholls\, along with guitarist Ross Bellenoit\, traveled to Floyd\, a small mountain town located in the Blue Ridge Highlands of Southwest Virginia\, for five uninterrupted days of recording. What emerged is Floyd Mercantile — a record that feels both intimate and timeless. \nThe makeshift studio was a decommissioned general store called (you guessed it!) Floyd Mercantile — a weathered wooden building standing across the road from an open pasture where cows wandered and grazed in the gentle early spring. (One cow even volunteered to be on the album cover.) Inside those old walls\, the trio recorded the album live — no isolation booths\, no heavy overdubbing — just three musicians in a room\, listening closely and letting the songs unfold in real time. \nThe sessions were recorded by Jeff Oehler and filmed in their entirety by partner Sue Bibeau and their associate Skylar Locke. Together\, Sue and Jeff comprise Beehive Pro\, an audio\, visual\, and design collective famed for their intimate recordings and thoughtfully considered visuals. They captured not just the sound\, but the atmosphere — the wood floors\, the daylight through the dusty windows\, and the creak of the porch boards could all be considered session players on this album. \nThe repertoire bridges eras. Mostly comprised of songs Peter and Jenna wrote separately\, there are a few gems from the Great American Songbook: “Skylark” (Hoagy Carmichael/Johnny Mercer)\, “Them There Eyes” (Maceo Pinkard/Doris Tauber/William Tracey)\, and “I’ll Be Seeing You” (Sammy Fain/Irving Kahal). \nThe visual and sonic tones of the project reflect the periods these songs evoke — even the newly composed tracks feel in conversation with another time. The goal was not nostalgia\, but continuity: to stand inside the lineage of American song and add something honest and present to it. \nFloyd Mercantile is not just an album. It’s a document of place. Of three musicians in a room. Of songs — old and new — allowed to breathe in the quiet of a Virginia afternoon.

DESCRIPTION:From food trucks to a jumbotron screen and kids’ zone\, the Lexington Visitors Center’s lawn will be transformed into an outdoor FIFA World Cup watch party from June 16-26. \nThe free event will feature 10 community tents per day\, kids’ activities\, food\, a beer garden\, and outdoor screenings of games from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m during the 10 days. We are honored to have Arlington Poet Laureate Teresa Cader as our chief guest. \n\n\nGlobal Voices in Verse is a monthly poetry gathering that celebrates the richness of global poetic traditions. This event provides a platform for cultural exchange through poetry\, inviting participants to read and share poems by poets from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Unlike traditional poetry readings\, this initiative encourages both poets and non-poets to engage with poetry beyond their own experiences\, fostering a deeper appreciation of different literary traditions. By bringing together voices from around the world\, the event highlights the power of poetry as a bridge between cultures. \nParticipants select a poem—whether from a well-known poet or a lesser-known voice—and present it in its original language\, followed by a discussion or translation to make it accessible to a wider audience. This format not only promotes linguistic diversity but also allows attendees to explore the historical\, social\, and emotional contexts of various poetic works. By engaging with poetry in this way\, Global Voices in Verse cultivates a welcoming space where literature becomes a shared experience\, inspiring cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.
