SUMMARY:Lexington Center Diwali Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights with its variations also celebrated in other Indian religions. It symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness\, good over evil\, and knowledge over ignorance”. \nDuring Diwali\, people illuminate their homes\, shops\, temples\, and workspaces with diyas (oil lamps)\, candles\, and lanterns. Diwali marks a major shopping festival in India and is comparable to the Christmas period in terms of consumer purchases and economic activity. It is traditionally a time when families purchase new clothing\, home goods\, gifts\, gold\, jewelry\, and other large purchases particularly as the festival is dedicated to Lakshmi\, the goddess of wealth and prosperity\, and such purchases are considered auspicious. \nThis year\, Lexington Together\, the Lexington Economic Development Office\, the Indian Association of Lexington\, Spaulding Management LLC\, Clay Oven and the Lexington Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the Diwali “Festival of Lights” Celebration to support retailers and restaurants in Lexington. Please join the celebrations on Wednesday\, October 15th\,  between 5 and 9 pm by taking a stroll of the shops in the Center to look at the decorations and a photo booth at 1666 Mass Ave for a special Diwali selfie. \nJoin us for a fun filled time of games\, crafts\, music\, and a buffet dinner at Clay Oven Restaurant (Reserve your dinner spot at https://clayovenlexington.com. Click on Events!) \nThen stroll through town: \n Liberty Sweets — Diwali goody bags The Venue — family-friendly Indian movie Maxima — Diwali-themed books Pinot’s Palette — family-friendly painting projects Rancatore’s — specialty Indian-inspired ice cream Royal India Bistro — grab a festive cocktail & a treat \nAs dark falls\, gather at the Historical Museum for an enchanting illumination show with LexLux.  Please come with an electric lantern or a diya for a special photo this Diwali. Presented by Munroe Center for the Arts and Youth STEAM Initiative Corp. \nThis Diwali\, let the spirit of light guide us to support local businesses\, so our celebrations brighten not just our homes but our community’s prosperity. \nPresented by Indian Americans of Lexington (IAL)\, Lexington Economic Development Office\, Lexington Chamber of Commerce\, Lexington Retailers Association\, Clay Oven\, and Spaulding Management LLC. \nSpecial LexLux Projection Display at Emery Park 8:30 PM. SUMMARY:LexHAB Raises Awareness of Affordable Housing Through Art with ‘HOME’ Exhibit and Events: Fundraiser October 23
DESCRIPTION:LexHAB invites the community to a series of events at LexArt’s Nye Gallery (130 Waltham Street) to celebrate and support affordable housing. ‘HOME’ is a juried art exhibit focused on the role of housing in our lives: while shelter is a basic need\, a house can be a haven or a nightmare\, a nest can be empty or overcrowded\, a home can be unattainable or inhabitable. A collaboration between LexHAB and LexArt\, the exhibit opens October 11 and runs through November 2. \nAs part of the exhibit\, LexHAB is hosting a fundraiser at the gallery on Oct. 23\, 6-8:30 p.m. This casual\, elegant event will include appetizers\, wine\, beer and mocktails among unique and creative interpretations of ‘home’ by New England artists. A portion of all art sales benefit LexHAB’s affordable housing. Tickets are available at lexhab.org. \nThe fundraising event’s schedule includes a talk by exhibit juror\, Anne Marie Stein\, about her powerful project\, Upscale Newton (upscalenewton.com)\, which examines the impact of teardowns and redevelopment in her community. LexHAB will present its annual Community Builder Award to Tiffany Payne\, a LexHAB resident\, for her outstanding advocacy for affordable housing as a member of the Affordable Housing Trust. \nThe event will also feature a raffle with prizes generously donated by area businesses\, including gift cards for spa services at Bella Sante Spa\, art at Galaray House\, plants at House 403\, and golf at Stone Meadow\, along with gift baskets crafted by beloved local businesses and tickets to see the Boston Bruins. Every ticket purchased supports LexHAB’s efforts to build a more inclusive Lexington. \n“We’re thrilled to bring people together through art to celebrate the importance of ‘home’ — security\, community\, and belonging — while raising awareness that these things are increasingly out of reach for too many in our town\,” said Sarah Morrison\, LexHAB’s Executive Director. “This event is a chance to support both local artists and our vital housing initiatives.” \nA lively and informative panel discussion\, “How Much Housing is Enough: Lexington’s Housing Needs\,” closes out the multidisciplinary housing-focused series on Oct. 30 from 5-7 p.m.  Panelists include Lexington residents and housing experts from Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies\, Lexington’s Housing Partnership Board\, the Affordable Housing Trust and more. \nDon’t miss these opportunities to enjoy great art\, engaging conversation and generous community spirit — all for a cause that helps make Lexington a home for everyone. \nLexHAB is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining affordable housing opportunities for low and moderate-income households in Lexington.

SUMMARY:Cary Lecture Series Presents: Cultivating Changemakers: Defending Democratic Education Today

She is the author of Making Americans: Stories of Historic Struggles\, New Ideas\, and Inspiration in Immigrant Education. \nDr. De’Shawn Washington was named 2024 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year while teaching fourth grade in Lexington.
