SUMMARY:NPN seminar: Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion and Belonging Through a Trauma Lens
DESCRIPTION:What happens when your DEIB (diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging) efforts become stagnant or ineffective? At the height of the pandemic\, a nonprofit organization in Western NY found itself in this very position. \nJoin Lexington-based Nonprofit Net’s virtual seminar to hear more about the organization’s trauma-informed training journey\, the outcomes\, and the benefits of becoming trauma aware in the space of DEIB. This approach is truly eye-opening. \nAbout the Speaker\nSusan Bull is the President and CEO of Arbor Housing and Development\, whose mission is to enhance the quality of life in communities by building independence and creating housing options. Susan has been in her current role since July 2021\, and for two years prior\, she served as Arbor’s Chief Operations Officer. \nSusan took a non-traditional path to what she defines as success by serving in the US Army active duty for five years\, later earning a bachelor’s degree in Community and Human Services\, and a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management and Leadership. Susan’s commitment to ethical governance\, sound program administration\, and care for people is evidenced in her leadership and service to the community.

SUMMARY:Living Well with Parkinson’s Disease with Anne Muskopf\, OTR/L
DESCRIPTION:Over 90\,000 people are estimated to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) in the US this year\, so chances are good that you know someone who has been affected. The 2023 Emmy nominated documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie has illuminated the courage and strength present in the people living with the disease from day to day. Many people associate PD with having a tremor but it’s a much more complex disease with many symptoms being invisible\, and it changes over time. How can someone with PD live well\, and how can you as a friend or family member support them? \nAnne Muskopf\, veteran Occupational Therapist and Director of the Charlotte & Richard Okonow Parkinson’s Family Support Program at Jewish Family & Children’s Service in Waltham will present a practical and holistic approach to living well with Parkinson’s Disease.

SUMMARY:Making Paper\, Sowing Seeds\, Considering Environment
DESCRIPTION:Korean Cultural Society of Boston (KCSB) will present Making Paper\, Sowing Seeds\, Considering Environment at LexArt (130 Waltham Street\, Lexington)\, on October 7-22\, 2023\, a special exhibit featuring the work of Jongkuk Lee\, a renowned nature artist\, who specializes in Hanji (Korean traditional paper). His materials are sourced from nature\, even from his homegrown\, paper mulberry trees. He is currently based in Cheongju\, South Korea\, where he serves as Director of Mabuel Gallery. \nIn the 1990s\, Lee settled in Bulat Village near Cheongju\, which was long famous for its tradition of making Hanji\, but as the demand for Hanji declined due to urbanization and industrial development\, few were left in the village to continue the tradition. Lee’s passion for making Hanji\, as well as his perspectives on the creative process as part of nature’s symbiotic relationship with humans\, has been a driving force for the revitalization of Hanji in the village. \nLee prompts us to reflect on how we can turn natural resources into artwork and commodities. He strives to create objects by examining the qualities and usability of different natural materials such as bamboo and silver grass (common reed). This approach to art is his way of responding to the current global ecological crisis. \nThis exhibit will showcase Hanji scrolls\, screens\, and handmade 3D works with various materials. There will also be an outdoor installation in collaboration with two other artists. \nBelow is the full event lineup:\nExhibit: Making Paper\, Sowing Seeds\, Considering Environment – Sat.\, 10/7 – Sun.\, 10/22\nArtist Talk: Thursday\, October 5\, at 7pm\nInteractive Workshop: Friday\, October 6\, at 1:30pm\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, October 7\, at 3-5pm

SUMMARY:Cary Lecture Series Presents Sol Gittleman\, An Accidental Triumph: The Improbable History of American Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Hardly a day passes without criticism of American higher education. Supreme Court decisions on admissions and student debt\, ideological attacks on faculty and curriculum\, anxiety about the cost of college\, and the fake athletic admissions scandals have all taken their toll. But there’s another side to this story. America has created\, mostly by accident\, a higher education enterprise unlike any in the world with a $36 BILLION trade surplus. In the years after WW II\, American faculty have dominated in Nobel Prizes\, while millions of international students attend American universities. We have become—and continue to be—the envy of the world despite recent hostility in our own country. How did this happen? \nSol Gittleman is a Tufts Professor Emeritus\, past Provost\, and prolific author of 6 books\, including Reynolds\, Raschi and Lopat: New York’s Big Three and the Great Yankee Dynasty of 1949-1953 and From Shtetl to Suburbia: The Family in Jewish Literary Imagination

SUMMARY:Pipa Meets Piano with Min Xiao-Fen & Lewis Porter
DESCRIPTION:Few artists have done more to both honor and reinvent the 2000-year history of the pipa than soloist\, vocalist and composer Min Xiao-Fen. Classically trained in her native China\, she served as a principal pipa soloist at Nanjing Traditional Music Orchestra and was an in-demand interpreter of traditional music before relocating to the United States and forging a new path for her instrument alongside many of the leading lights in modern jazz\, free improvisation\, experimental and contemporary classical music. NPR Weekend Edition lauded Ms. Min as “one of the world’s greatest virtuosos” and JazzTimes hailed her as “a pioneer in integrating her ancient instrument with modern jazz and improvised music.” The New York Times raved that her singular work “has traversed a sweeping musical odyssey.” Min recently received a prestigious commission from the Smithsonian Institution to compose soundtracks for two Chinese historical silent films from the 1920s (premiered on May\, 6 2023 at Freer Gallery of Art in DC). Other notable works include the 2021 album White Lotus\, her original score to the 1934 silent film The Goddess\, the deeply personal 2017 release Mao\, Monk and Me\, which explores the music of Thelonious Monk and Min’s Blue Pipa Trio that commingles trumpeter Buck Clayton’s Kansas City swing with the music of Li Jinhui\, the “Father of Chinese popular music.” Min was a curator at The Stone and the Museum of Chinese in America in New York. She also served as artist-in-residence with the Sound of Dragon Society for the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and was a guiding artist for the Creative Music Studio and the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. www.minbluepipa.com \nAs a pianist\, Lewis Porter has appeared on 37 albums with Terri Lyne Carrington\, John Patitucci\, Tia Fuller\, Dave Liebman\, Mark Ribot\, James Brandon Lewis\, and many others. A renowned researcher and historian\, he is the author of “Playback with Lewis Porter\,” a jazz essay series at https://lewisporter.substack.com/\, of which Ted Gioia writes “Porter is the real deal—a genuine expert & trusted authority.” He has authored or co-authored two acclaimed books on John Coltrane\, five other books\, and numerous short publications. Porter is a longtime jazz professor with a PhD in musicology and has taught for many years at Rutgers\, Tufts\, Brandeis\, the New England Conservatory\, and as a popular guest speaker at many other colleges across the U.S.A. and Europe. He was nominated for a Grammy in 1995 and won the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award in 2021. A recent album is at: https://lewisportermusic.bandcamp.com/album/beauty-mystery. Lewisporter.com
