The Board will be making decisions such as what size carts will be provided\, what options are available for overflow waste\, and what flexibility can be built into the program for residents with varied needs. \nBefore finalizing the program\, we want to hear from you! DESCRIPTION:Ahead of the 25th anniversary of September 11\, Livestrong\, a nonprofit  dedicated to improving the daily lives of cancer survivors\, is hosting a landmark First Responder Ride for Resilience\, a five-day\, 343-mile cycling journey from Boston to the 9/11 Memorial in New York City honoring the 343 firefighters lost on September 11\, 2001. Riders will move through Lexington on Sunday\, September 6. Local residents are invited to cheer on riders\, volunteer at a water stop\, or donate to show their support.  \nAccording to research from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health\, firefighters are nine percent more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and 14 percent more likely to die from it than the general public. SUMMARY:Sing with Lexington Pops Chorus

SUMMARY:Alan Dawson: Leading Lexingtonian
DESCRIPTION:Lexington has heroes in every century\, as change-seekers have made their mark on the town. Through building community\, working for social change\, pioneering in their fields\, and pursuing creative passions\, Leading Lexingtonians keep Lexington on the map as a historic place. This lecture series highlights their accomplishments\, which are also displayed on a rotating basis in the Lexington Depot Museum. \nAlan Dawson was an extraordinary jazz drummer\, percussionist\, and teacher who inspired countless students to pursue professional music and instruction. His accomplishments were many: He played with the Army Dance Band at Fort Dix during the Korean War. He taught at Berklee College of Music\, and offered private lessons in his own home. His drumming was featured on albums with artists such as Quincy Jones\, Clifford Brown\, Dexter Gordon\, and Dave Brubeck. He formed his own band\, the Alan Dawson Quartet\, and had a posthumous album\, Waltzin’ with Flo\, released in 2000. Most importantly\, his teaching methods are still being used today by his students who continue to lift up the next generation of jazz musicians.  \nJoin us as we welcome family\, former students\, and music enthusiasts to honor Dawson’s legacy in Lexington. SUMMARY:From Suffragette to War Worker: Stories of Women War Workers at Raytheon 1941-45
DESCRIPTION:This talk spans the 100-year fight for women’s rights\, beginning with the Suffragette movement and the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920.  It moves on to the great stock market crash on Black Monday in 1929\, and the New Deal as a response to the Great Depression under President Franklin D. Roosevelt\, before focusing on America’s entry into World War II in 1941.  Suddenly\, war plants all over America needed female workers. Here in Massachusetts\, Raytheon aggressively advertised for women workers with recruitment posters\, newspapers\, and radio ads. Soon\, thousands of women were performing all types of electronic component production and assembly work\, from radar to radio tubes. At the insistence of Eleanor Roosevelt\, the ranks of the military and other professions\, including Civil Defense\, Red Cross\, etc. became open to women.  At war’s end on September 2\, 1945\, tens of thousands of women were immediately laid off.  Many women\, however\, found newly earned access to jobs once held by men. DESCRIPTION:Following last year’s popular and oversubscribed event\, join us once again for a repeat performance of a special kind of ball this September\, but don’t worry about bringing your dancing shoes! Once the sun goes down\, bugs will be the ones showing off their moves. During this nature walk hosted by both the Town of Lexington Conservation Division and CLC\, and with special guest Jace Porter of the Global Entomology Coalition\, we will get up close and personal with the nighttime residents of our local conservation areas. We will be using a large sheet illuminated with ultraviolet light to attract all manner of fascinating critters – moths\, beetles\, flies\, spiders\, stick insects\, or true bugs are just some of the things we might see (and if you’re curious what the differences are between “bugs” and “true bugs\,” then this might be the event for you!). We will also have on display a collection of previously captured and pinned specimens of all shapes\, sizes\, and species to supplement the living bugs we encounter. Come learn all about some of the near-limitless forms of arthropods with us\, and see what the buzz is all about. \nLong pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toed shoes\, and a headlamp (preferably with a red light setting) are strongly recommended. Hooded shirts/sweaters or mesh head nets are recommended. Magnifying glasses are encouraged. DESCRIPTION:The Lexington Council for the Arts is proud to announce the 4th annual Lexington Porchfest on Sept 26th from 1-5 pm (Rain date 9/27)! \nEnjoy the day celebrating the musicians in our midst as your neighbors open their porches (and driveways\, patios\, yards) to music. \nWe will provide a map and musical act descriptions on lexfest.org. If you’re interested in playing or hosting\, you can find sign up links on that site as well. Let there be songs to fill the air!
