SUMMARY:8th Annual TriNethra - The Third Eye Festival of Dance
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2015 by renowned dancer and choreographer Jayshree Bala Rajamani\, TriNethra – The Third Eye Festival of Dance seeks to promote and preserve the rich classical dance traditions of India. Its very name reflects its vision — to open the audience’s “third eye” to the beauty\, depth and spiritual resonance of Indian dance. \nTriNethra creates an elegant\, meaningful and soulfully-uplifting space where dancers and audiences connect in a truly transformative experience. Artists are specially invited and compensated for their art\, honoring their dedication and ensuring that their work is valued. Over eight editions\, more than fifty celebrated artists from across the USA and abroad have graced its stage. \nThe festival has presented some of the most respected names in classical Indian dance — including Rama Vaidyanathan\, Roja Kannan\, Vaibhav Arekar\, and Dr. Kaberi Sen — as well as unique forms like Yakshagana\, featured in a special 2018 presentation. Audiences have experienced a diverse spectrum of dance traditions including Bharatanatyam\, Kathak\, Odissi\, Manipuri\, Mohiniyattam\, Kuchipudi\, Shilpa Natanam\, and innovative collaborative works by both local and international performers. \nA vital part of TriNethra’s mission is to offer young dancers in the U.S. — who have trained in these classical forms — an opportunity to perform beyond their Arangetram\, Rangapravesh\, or Manchpravesh\, giving them a platform to grow as artists and connect with wider audiences. \nHonored as a recipient of the Mass Cultural Council Festival Award for multiple years\, TriNethra is New England’s oldest and most celebrated classical Indian dance festival. With each edition\, it deepens the shared experience between dancer and audience — a moment of collective joy\, inspiration and awakening.

SUMMARY:Barbaby Bright at Harmony on the Green November 8th
DESCRIPTION:Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Concerts continues its fourth season with the Kansas City-based Barnaby Bright. Not easily defined\, Barnaby Bright is an alt-Americana trio with contemporary influences that reflect their geographical journey from Brooklyn to Nashville to Kansas\, while calling on Nathan’s Oklahoma roots and distant relation to Merle Haggard. The band has accumulated a dedicated following that feeds on their ability to spin storytelling into sonic treasures. A BB show will take audiences on a ride through love songs\, murder ballads and deeply moving\, relatable themes. The most commonly uttered phrase at the end of a show seems to be\, “that was a spiritual experience.” \nNathan’s virtuosic acoustic guitar & banjo-playing and Becky’s effortless soaring vocals over the drone of the harmonium are pushing the boundaries of today’s indie folk landscape. \nThe duo spent a decade touring and making records before recently adding Carmen Dieker to the band. The blend of their three-part harmonies and Carmen’s haunting fiddle and violin-playing add an element to shows that fans of the band never knew they had been wanting. \nBarnaby Bright received the grand prize at NYC’s prestigious Songwriter’s Circle\, were elected to Amazon’s Top 100 Albums of the Year\, and most recently\, their Christmas album was picked by The New York Times as one of the Top 20 Christmas Albums of the Year\, with five of the songs being featured in the Netflix hit TV show\, Sex/Life. \nWhile opening for illustrious acts such as Norah Jones and The Lumineers\, Barnaby Bright continues to mesmerize audiences and convert new followers one show at a time while raising awareness of Kansas City’s diverse landscape.

SUMMARY:Antisemitism: Ancient Roots and Current Life Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Come join people of different faiths to turn our attention to what is sometimes referred to as humanity’s oldest hatred: hatred of Jews. We’ll think together about where we are in this long and often painful history as it unfolds day by day in homes\, schools and places of worship. After helping ourselves to a buffet lunch\, we’ll watch Christians and Antisemitism\, a new 7-minute video produced by Lexington United Against Antisemitism (LUAA) featuring local clergy and Christian and Jewish laypeople. Following this quick but powerful presentation\, we’ll hear from a panel that includes the video’s producer Steve Van Evera\, people from different faith practices\, and Jewish parents whose children have experienced antisemitism at local schools. Then\, in small multifaith groups\, we will have facilitated dialogue about our perspectives and life experiences related to antisemitism. Registration is required; this event is free.

SUMMARY:Nov. 16: Halalisa Singers in "Libertatum: Songs of Freedom"
DESCRIPTION:Boston-based world music vocal ensemble The Halalisa Singers\, led by artistic director Mary Cunningham\, presents Libertatum: Songs of Freedom on Sunday\, Nov. 16\, 3 p.m. at First Parish in Lexington\, 7 Harrington Road. The program will be repeated on Saturday\, Nov. 22\, 7:30 p.m. at First Church in Littleton\, 19 Foster St. Pianist Trevor Berens\, trumpeter Ryan Noe\, violinist Elena Spencer\, and percussionist Abe Finch accompany. Tickets are $25. For information visit www.halalisa.org/concerts. \n\nThe program’s centerpiece is Kyle Pederson’s inspirational five-movement suite\, “A Vision Unfolding” for chorus\, piano\, violin\, trumpet and percussion. The piece explores themes including compassion\, freedom\, inclusivity and justice. Lush harmonies and compelling rhythms are interspersed with spoken word narration featuring poetry by Shanelle Gabriel. Sung texts include Walt Whitman’s compelling “Beat! Drums!” and Langston Hughes’s beloved “I Dream a World.” \n\n\nThe low voices of the choir perform Jim Papoulis’s intricate “Libertatum (Freedom)\,” which begins with a traditional Latin motet style before evolving into a contemporary anthem of freedom that includes body percussion and rousing choral singing. The choir’s high voices are featured in “I’m on My Way.” Based on the 1950s Mahalia Jackson version of the traditional spiritual\, Anthony Trecek-King’s driving arrangement is rhythmic\, passionate and dynamic. A Halalisa small ensemble will sing “Found/Tonight\,” a beautiful choral medley of tunes from the popular musicals “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Hamilton.” \nAlso on the program are Alysia Lee’s “Say Her Name\,” a musical statement against police brutality against Black women and others and a potent call to action; the joyful\, powerful walking song “Lead With Love” by vocal activist Melanie DeMore; Mark Miller’s exuberant arrangement of the African American spiritual “I’m Gonna Sing;” Palestinian/Jordanian/Canadian composer Shireen Abu-Khader’s touching arrangement of the song “Lao Rahal Soti (If My Voice Departs);” and choral composer Brian Tate’s “One Million Voices\,” which grows in intensity and strength as it urges audiences to speak out against injustice.

SUMMARY:The Cars: Let the Stories Be Told | A CONVERSATION WITH AUTHOR/MUSICIAN BILL JANOVITZ & MUSIC WRITER JIM SULLIVAN
DESCRIPTION:In his new definitive book\, New York Times bestselling author Bill Janovitz explores the musical\, cultural\, and commercial impact of The Cars\, one of the biggest and most influential bands of the 1970s and 80s. With roots in Maryland\, Ohio\, New York\, and New England\, eventually convening in Boston\, The Cars were journeymen musicians\, all forming and performing in a series of bands before finding each other along with the right sound at the right time. It turned them into Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Janovitz reveals the stories of each member of the band\, and of the band as a unit\, with great care and understanding. He has the cooperation of the surviving members and everyone in the orbit of the band\, but he does not shy away from the significant conflicts within the group or the reasons for the band’s untimely end. The band’s unusual providence in the Boston area\, with the support of Jonathan Richman\, is fully explored for the first time. Each of the band’s landmark albums is chronicled and dissected in the way that only a writer and musician like Janovitz can achieve. To paraphrase the band’s own lyrics\, hello again\, you might think this is just what music readers needed. It’s magic. Let’s shake it up and let the good times roll. \nBill Janovitz is the New York Times bestselling author of Leon Russell: The Master of Space and Time’s Journey Through Rock & Roll History\, The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St.\, and Rocks Off: 50 Tracks That Tell the Story of the Rolling Stones. He is a founding member of the international touring and recording band Buffalo Tom\, formed in 1986 in Massachusetts. His most recent work has appeared in the Cambridge Companion series\, Cambridge University Press; the Observer; Esquire.com; Rock and Roll Globe; and Post Road.
