SUMMARY:Becoming Janet: Finding Myself in the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:On September 1\, 1939\, when Germany invaded Poland\, with nowhere to run or hide\, Gustawa Singer’s parents gave her away to save her life. For the next several years\, 7-year-old Gustawa lived a clandestine existence\, harboring a secret that her looks hid so well: she was Jewish. Passed between strangers with both honorable and deceitful intentions\, Gustawa maneuvered through terrifying situations with only the identity papers of a deceased Polish girl and a well-rehearsed cover story. She came to learn the importance of secrecy and resilience. Her quick wits and the courage of a few virtuous individuals combined to beat the odds. By the end of the war\, over 90% of her town’s Jews were annihilated; Janet was one of the few children to return. \nOn Monday\, December 8 at Brookhaven at Lexington\, 1010 Waltham Street\, Janet will discuss her book and tell her personal story. Free and open to the public\, this event is sponsored by the Lexington Veterans Association.  The program starts with coffee and conversation at 12:45 pm\, with the talk at 1:15 pm.  If you plan to attend via Zoom\, find the Zoom link at lexmavets.com.

SUMMARY:Book Chat: Washington and Hamilton: The Alliance that Forged America
DESCRIPTION:The paternal relationship between George Washington and Alexander Hamilton captivated the nation in the musical Hamilton\, but the true story of the tumultuous duo goes much further. Washington and Hamilton: The Alliance that Forged America by Stephen K. Knott and Tony Williams shows two opposing forces\, one stoic\, the other ambitious\, represented the complexities of the new America. Together they worked together to achieve an equilibrium that would benefit an equally complex nation\, fighting side by side to fend off detractors and lay the groundwork for modern politics. Join us for a discussion\, leader TBD\, about these equally enigmatic founding fathers!\n\n\n  \nReading Into History: Book Chats is a series of informal discussions of historical topics inspired by nonfiction history books\, and led by authors\, historians\, and local history enthusiasts. All are welcome; reading the book is not required\, but will enhance the experience! Dates are subject to change given speaker availability\, and discussion leaders will be clearly identified in the event description when solidified.\n  \n\n  \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers\n  \nRegistration coming soon!

SUMMARY:The Cars: Let the Stories Be Told | A CONVERSATION WITH AUTHOR/MUSICIAN BILL JANOVITZ & MUSIC WRITER JIM SULLIVAN
DESCRIPTION:In his new definitive book\, New York Times bestselling author Bill Janovitz explores the musical\, cultural\, and commercial impact of The Cars\, one of the biggest and most influential bands of the 1970s and 80s. With roots in Maryland\, Ohio\, New York\, and New England\, eventually convening in Boston\, The Cars were journeymen musicians\, all forming and performing in a series of bands before finding each other along with the right sound at the right time. It turned them into Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Janovitz reveals the stories of each member of the band\, and of the band as a unit\, with great care and understanding. He has the cooperation of the surviving members and everyone in the orbit of the band\, but he does not shy away from the significant conflicts within the group or the reasons for the band’s untimely end. The band’s unusual providence in the Boston area\, with the support of Jonathan Richman\, is fully explored for the first time. Each of the band’s landmark albums is chronicled and dissected in the way that only a writer and musician like Janovitz can achieve. To paraphrase the band’s own lyrics\, hello again\, you might think this is just what music readers needed. It’s magic. Let’s shake it up and let the good times roll. \nBill Janovitz is the New York Times bestselling author of Leon Russell: The Master of Space and Time’s Journey Through Rock & Roll History\, The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St.\, and Rocks Off: 50 Tracks That Tell the Story of the Rolling Stones. He is a founding member of the international touring and recording band Buffalo Tom\, formed in 1986 in Massachusetts. His most recent work has appeared in the Cambridge Companion series\, Cambridge University Press; the Observer; Esquire.com; Rock and Roll Globe; and Post Road.

SUMMARY:Beadesigner International (BDI) is celebrating Indigenous Peoples Month
DESCRIPTION:Beadesigner International (BDI) is celebrating Indigenous Peoples Month with a virtual lecture by Maureen Matthews D. Phil (Oxon)\, an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Manitoba and former Curator of Cultural Anthropology at the Manitoba Museum (2011 to 2023). Before joining the museum\, Dr. Matthews was a CBC radio investigative journalist and both her museum anthropology research and her journalism focus on the wisdom\, humour and art of Anishinaabeg and Nehiyawak-speaking peoples. In Anishinaabemowin\, beads manidoomin (literally “spirit beads”) are animate and when Indigenous people teach each other to bead\, they admonish the students to have good thoughts and to speak kindly to the beads to ensure their cooperation in the creation of beautiful work. This talk will explore the implications of this idea while virtually touring the collections of the Manitoba Museum. Please see the BDI website for further information and to register for the Zoom link or email: programming@beadesignerintl.org. \nMembers Meeting – November 2025 \n \nMember meetings and programs are free for members and first-time guests. After attending one meeting\, we ask that guests join our group ($30/yr) if they wish to attend a subsequent meeting.
