SUMMARY:Fall Foraging with Naturalist Emily Carvalho at LexFarm
DESCRIPTION:Fall is a wonderful time to search for wild edibles—there are lots of nutrient-dense foods available. Join naturalist Emily Carvalho as she again takes us on an informative walk through LexFarm to discover the wild foods and herbs that thrive in this season. \nEmily Carvalho is a naturalist with a passion for inspiring others to cultivate their own relationships with the natural world through gardening\, foraging\, and wildlife watching. This walk is ideal both for those who are new to foraging and for those who would like to extend their knowledge of foraging into the cooler months. From nuts to roots to seeds\, Emily Carvalho will demonstrate how to correctly identify and harvest plants and discuss their many culinary and medicinal uses. Participants will help forage for black walnuts and learn how to cure and harvest this delicious nut. The walk will end with foraged snacks and refreshments crafted by Emily. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather\, including boots and work gloves (black walnuts stain skin and clothing). The walking tour will meet at the LexFarm parking lot. \nRegistration Required

SUMMARY:Book Chat on "The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams" by Stacy Schiff
DESCRIPTION:The Revolution is coming! New for 2024-25\, our Book Chat series will examine books and biographies that explore the people and legacy of the American Revolution – just in time for 250th anniversary celebrations.\n\nStacy Schiff’s latest book explores one of the most pivotal figures in the Battle of Lexington – who was not even from Lexington! When Paul Revere rode into town on the night of April 18th\, 1775\, his mission was to alert Adams and John Hancock – two of the most radical and well-connected revolutionaries in Massachusetts – that the British raid on military supplies in Concord may include their arrest for treason. The need for the leader of the Revolution to hide in a sleepy suburban town initiated a chain of events that would change American history forever. But how did a man from an affluent family become the fiery politician we know today\, who orchestrated some of the most important events of the Revolution? Join us for a discussion on Schiff’s book and Adams’ life to find out!\n\nPlease note that due to construction at the Depot\, Book Chats for the 2024-25 season will take place in the archives and Research Center at Munroe Tavern.\n\n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Harmony on the Green welcomes singer/songwriter Katie Dahl\, with Micah John opening
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter KATIE DAHL joins us at Harmony on the Green on Saturday\, November 16th!\n\n“Katie Dahl’s songs aren’t just melodies and words\, they’re journeys that are firmly grounded in a sense of place—beautiful\, real landscapes that help you feel places that you may have never been before. That’s the very best kind of songwriting.”—Dar Williams\n\n“Razor-sharp lyrics with a hearty\, soulful voice.”— American Songwriter\n\nClear-eyed and tough-minded\, songwriter/playwright Katie Dahl is known for her smart songs\, wry wit\, and wise spirit. A small-town celebrity on the Wisconsin peninsula where her family has lived for 175 years\, Katie is an internationally touring\, radio-charting artist who “delivers razor-sharp lyrics with a hearty\, soulful voice” (American Songwriter). In live shows that are both courageously honest and devilishly funny\, Katie dives deep into questions of land and love\, family and body image\, grief and joy. “In unsettled times\,” says Peter Mulvey\, “Katie Dahl brings us a grounded spirit.”\n\nKatie’s five albums of original songs showcase her creamy alto\, abiding love of the land\, trademark humor\, and unflinching vulnerability. Her recent work finds her exploring deeper territory than ever before\, from anxiety to body image to the challenges of growing up queer in an evangelical church. Richly steeped in the American songwriting tradition\, Katie navigates the muddy waters between the personal\, public\, and political with tenderness and dexterity.\n\nIn 2024\, Katie was named a Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Finalist\, as well as “Most Wanted to Return” at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist Showcase. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes\, “Katie Dahl . . . combine[s] old-fashioned populism\, an abiding love of the land and wickedly smart love songs\, all delivered in a rich and expressive alto.”\n\nKatie’s most recent album\, Seven Stones (2023) is a deep dive into vulnerability originally titled Things Katie Dahl Finds Hard to Say. Produced by Julie Wolf and featuring appearances by such luminaries as Kris Delmhorst\, Peter Mulvey\, and Eliza Gilkyson\, the album was praised as “breathtaking” by Country Queer and spent a month at #2 on the folk radio charts. Her 2019 album Wildwood\, was produced by JT Nero (Birds of Chicago) and features Allison Russell; the album’s song “Worry My Friend” hit #6 on the folk radio charts in 2019.\n\nSays Nero\, “Katie Dahl is the real deal. She’s a ‘regional’ artist the way Robert Frost is a regional artist\, meaning everybody in the world can appreciate the way she captures the spirit of a place–and the generations of humans who’ve lived\, loved\, and died there–with such grace\, nuance\, and grit.”\n\nOpening for Katie will be MICAH A. JOHN\, who was a crowd-pleaser when she joined Antje Duvekot on stage in March. Micah is a Boston-based multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist\, and singer-songwriter. She plays American Roots Music of several types\, including Old Time songs and tunes\, Bluegrass\, Folk\, Country\, and Americana.\nA Berklee City Music High School Academy and an award-winning fiddler\, Micah has won many fiddle competitions and has been fortunate to study fiddle with several amazing teachers\, including Bronwyn\, Bobby Britt\, and Bruce Molsky. A graduate of Micah\, she also plays and studies guitar and can contribute to a song on mandolin\, bass\, and clawhammer banjo.– – – – – – – – – –Harmony on the Green is wheelchair accessible\, and we have accessible single-user bathrooms. There are ADA parking spots in our back parking lot and two on the side of the building. Ample parking is available in our lot and on Mass. Ave. Our front entrance is accessible\, and the elevator to the left once you enter will take you up to Clark Hall. We hope you’ll join us!

SUMMARY:Cary Lecture Series Presents: What Children Teach Us About Altruism
DESCRIPTION:What Children Teach Us About Altruism with Felix Warneken \nIn his research on the origins of social cognition\, Psychology Professor\, Dr. Felix Warneken\, dispels the myth that children are born selfish and must be taught empathy. With his team at the University of Michigan\, he investigates the origins of cooperation and morality. He will share fascinating-and irresistible- videos and photographs from his laboratory experiments\, showing that children as young as 18 months old engage in altruistic behaviors such as helping others to solve problems and share resources. With implications for parents and educators\, he identifies many of the factors that influence cooperative tendencies throughout childhood. \nDr. Warkneken has received numerous awards and fellowships for his groundbreaking research\, including from the National Science Foundation\, the American Psychological Association\, and the Radcliffe Center for Advanced Study. His experiments have also been featured in television documentaries on PBS Nova\, CBC\, and Netflix.
