SUMMARY:Mosquito and Tick Control: How to Keep Your Family Safe Without Poisoning Your Yard
DESCRIPTION:Mosquitos and ticks are a nuisance at best and health risk at worst\, so it’s understandable why people often turn to insecticides to try and control these pests. Though spraying may seem like a quick and easy way to deal with mosquitos and ticks\, it’s often an ineffective control strategy. Worse\, these insecticides are toxic to pollinators and other beneficial insects. Join us to learn about the risks that mosquito spraying poses and discuss practical\, alternative methods of mosquito and tick control in residential landscapes. \nAaron Anderson of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation works with the public and Xerces staff to reduce pesticide use in residential landscapes\, including promoting alternative pest control measures and pollinator-friendly gardening practices. Prior to joining Xerces in 2022\, he researched pollinator conservation in urban landscapes\, restored habitat for several endangered butterfly species\, and worked in insect biocontrol. Aaron has a PhD from Oregon State University.

SUMMARY:The Brain\, the Mind\, and Everything Else WITH CARA BEAN
DESCRIPTION:Join author-illustrator and former Lexington High School educator Cara Bean for this presentation about how\nan LHS seminar about mental health spawned a five-year creative journey in making a mental health graphic novel for youth. Her first book for adolescents\, Here I Am\, I Am Me: An Illustrated Guide to Mental Health is a a full-color graphic novel-style adventure through the brain that demystifies and destigmatizes emotional and mental health for children ages 12 and up. Without talking down to its readers\, Here I Am\, I Am Me doesn’t pretend that teens are immune to mental health struggles and masterfully discusses difficult and crucial topics while equipping readers with mindfulness tips\, specific resources\, and empathetic affirmations. Readers will learn to destigmatize the conversation around mental health by reframing their thinking\, learning how to use conscious language\, and helping themselves and others through mental health dilemmas.

SUMMARY:Community Presentation on Networked Geothermal Lexington
DESCRIPTION:Community Presentation on Networked Geothermal in Lexington \nJune 4\, 2024\, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm\nCommunity Center Dining Room \nLexington has received a Kickstart Massachusetts grant to study the feasibility of installing networked geothermal systems at selected sites in the Town. The grant program was established by the nonprofit HEET and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to develop a pipeline of shovel-ready geothermal network sites by the end of this year. \nNetworked geothermal is a proven technology for efficiently decarbonizing the heating and cooling of buildings. It has the potential to accelerate the transition from gas to clean energy at the speed and scale needed to meet the state’s net zero carbon emissions goals. \nCome to this information session to learn about networked geothermal\, the Kickstart Mass program\, and a progress report on Lexington’s feasibility study.

SUMMARY:Book Chat on American Midnight with Adam Hochschild
DESCRIPTION:America in the World War I era was a tinderbox: a time of fierce debate over labor rights\, free speech\, and racial equality. In an era marked by vigilanteism spurred on by the government\, citizen turned against citizen in the war over what it means to be American. Lynchings\, suppression of the press\, and violence against conscientious objectors marred our ideals of democracy. A colorful cast of characters\, from Woodrow Wilson to Emma Goldman and J. Edgar Hoover joined in the fray. \nJoin author Adam Hochschild for a conversation on this little-known era of American history whose legacy is still felt with us today.
