SUMMARY:Cary Memorial Library Literary Cafe presents Writing Young Adult Novels - May 8
DESCRIPTION:Cary Memorial Library’s next Literary Café on May 8 at 7 pm will spotlight three Boston-area Young Adult authors—Autumn Allen (ALL YOU HAVE TO DO)\, TM Blanchet (HERRICK’S END\, HERRICK’S LIE\, HERRICK’S KEY)\, and Desmond Hall (YOUR CORNER DARK and the forthcoming BETTER MUST COME)—to explore the different ways writers interpret and embrace YA storytelling to craft meaningful and moving stories that inspire readers of all ages. The YA genre—which includes fantasy\, realistic and historical fiction\, thrillers\, and much more—is only growing in reach and relevance\, and our panelists will address what drew them to writing YA and how their writing careers have developed. No need to read the authors’ books in advance\, just come for an engaging and fun conversation! Hosted by Cary Library Foundation Board Member Kimberly Hensle Lowrance. The event will be held at Cary Library\, 1874 Massachusetts Ave\, Lexington\, MA\, and via Zoom. SUMMARY:Cantemus Chorus Declares “love is love is love”
DESCRIPTION:Lexington High School’s Director of Choruses\, Jason Iannuzzi\, will conduct the 38-singer Cantemus Chamber Chorus in two Mother’s Day weekend concerts titled “love is love is love.” The program explores four forms of love: between parent and child\, for friends\, between lovers\, and love for humanity. LHS seniors Izzy Baron and Deniz Dokmecioglu\, along with Beverly High School senior Braden Willenbrock\, are Cantemus Choral Interns who have rehearsed and performed with the chorus since September. \nThe “love is love is love” program mixes modern arrangements of traditional songs with tender songs by such well-known composers as Pablo Casals\, Leonard Bernstein\, and Eric Whitacre — and more robust works by the humorous P.D.Q. Bach. Performances will be at St.Peter’s Church in Beverly on May 11 at 7:30 pm\, and St. Paul’s Church in Newburyport on May 12 at 4:00 pm. SUMMARY:V is for Victory: FDR’s Efforts to Prepare the US for War
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Bob Lewis\, Captain\, USN\, Retired \nBy June 1940\, France had fallen to the Nazi blitzkrieg\, and Hitler’s vision of world domination loomed large. Britain stood as the last bastion of resistance against Germany. Behind the scenes\, FDR was secretly working with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill\, planning the shipment of surplus war materials to Great Britain. He skillfully navigated the complex political landscape to prepare the United States for its eventual involvement in World War II. FDR\, a Democrat\, appointed pro-interventionist Republicans Henry Stimson and Frank Knox\, as Secretaries of War and the Navy. The groundwork laid between November 1940 and December 7\, 1941 – a full year before the attack on Pearl Harbor and our declaration of war against Germany and Japan – became the cornerstone for American participation in WWII. \nTo participate by Zoom\, go to carylibrary.org/events.

SUMMARY:Plant & Craft Fair - First Parish in Bedford
DESCRIPTION:First Parish on the Bedford Common’s annual plant and craft fair returns for its 68th year. The fair begins at 10 a.m. and goes to 3 p.m. on Saturday\, May 18 – rain or shine. \nThe First Parish Plant Fair’s long-time tradition began in the side yard of the Historic Fitch Tavern\, home of the Joslin family. The Joslins were members of First Parish and avid gardeners. They and their fellow members had the idea to share their plants with the community. It was such a popular idea\, it eventually outgrew the side yard and moved across the street to the Town Common\, where it has been for 68 years. \nThe fair has grown (pun intended) over the years\, and now includes crafters\, artists\, music\, games\, books\, and activities for children – a real community event beyond just plants. \nProceeds from the plant and craft sale will support the work of The First Parish in Bedford\, Unitarian Universalist. In addition to other programs\, First Parish supports local initiatives including Bedford Embraces Diversity\, the Annual Tenacity Challenge at Bedford High School\, and the Bedford Family Connection.

SUMMARY:Mosquito and Tick Control: How to Keep Your Family Safe Without Poisoning Your Yard
DESCRIPTION:Mosquitos and ticks are a nuisance at best and health risk at worst\, so it’s understandable why people often turn to insecticides to try and control these pests. Though spraying may seem like a quick and easy way to deal with mosquitos and ticks\, it’s often an ineffective control strategy. Worse\, these insecticides are toxic to pollinators and other beneficial insects. Join us to learn about the risks that mosquito spraying poses and discuss practical\, alternative methods of mosquito and tick control in residential landscapes. \nAaron Anderson of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation works with the public and Xerces staff to reduce pesticide use in residential landscapes\, including promoting alternative pest control measures and pollinator-friendly gardening practices. Prior to joining Xerces in 2022\, he researched pollinator conservation in urban landscapes\, restored habitat for several endangered butterfly species\, and worked in insect biocontrol. Aaron has a PhD from Oregon State University.

SUMMARY:The Brain\, the Mind\, and Everything Else WITH CARA BEAN
DESCRIPTION:Join author-illustrator and former Lexington High School educator Cara Bean for this presentation about how\nan LHS seminar about mental health spawned a five-year creative journey in making a mental health graphic novel for youth. Her first book for adolescents\, Here I Am\, I Am Me: An Illustrated Guide to Mental Health is a a full-color graphic novel-style adventure through the brain that demystifies and destigmatizes emotional and mental health for children ages 12 and up. Without talking down to its readers\, Here I Am\, I Am Me doesn’t pretend that teens are immune to mental health struggles and masterfully discusses difficult and crucial topics while equipping readers with mindfulness tips\, specific resources\, and empathetic affirmations. Readers will learn to destigmatize the conversation around mental health by reframing their thinking\, learning how to use conscious language\, and helping themselves and others through mental health dilemmas.
