SUMMARY:Recycling Lies and Plastic Problems: What I Learned from a Year of No Garbage
DESCRIPTION:Internationally published author and humorist Eve Schaub challenged her family to attempt the seemingly impossible: to live in the modern world\, for an entire year\, without creating any trash at all. The resulting memoir\, Year of No Garbage\, has been featured in the New Yorker\, and was described by Bill McKibben as filled with “humor and grace.” Schaub reveals shocking truths she learned along the way about garbage\, plastics\, and the recycling industry. DESCRIPTION:The Gold Rush of 1849 brought scores of the hopeful to California\, both to mine the hills for treasure\, and to build the railroads that would connect the newly wealthy frontier to the rest of the country. Chinese immigrants made up a massive part of this labor force. As they entered the US and the rest of the Western workforce in record numbers\, however\, cultural clashes and racism led to “the Chinese question”: should Western countries allow Chinese immigration at all? In 1882\, the United States decided the answer was “no” with the Chinese Exclusion Act. DESCRIPTION:Lexington High School’s Director of Choruses\, Jason Iannuzzi\, will conduct the 38-singer Cantemus Chamber Chorus in two Mother’s Day weekend concerts titled “love is love is love.” The program explores four forms of love: between parent and child\, for friends\, between lovers\, and love for humanity. LHS seniors Izzy Baron and Deniz Dokmecioglu\, along with Beverly High School senior Braden Willenbrock\, are Cantemus Choral Interns who have rehearsed and performed with the chorus since September. \nThe “love is love is love” program mixes modern arrangements of traditional songs with tender songs by such well-known composers as Pablo Casals\, Leonard Bernstein\, and Eric Whitacre — and more robust works by the humorous P.D.Q. DESCRIPTION:First Parish on the Bedford Common’s annual plant and craft fair returns for its 68th year. The fair begins at 10 a.m. and goes to 3 p.m. on Saturday\, May 18 – rain or shine. \nThe First Parish Plant Fair’s long-time tradition began in the side yard of the Historic Fitch Tavern\, home of the Joslin family. The Joslins were members of First Parish and avid gardeners. They and their fellow members had the idea to share their plants with the community. It was such a popular idea\, it eventually outgrew the side yard and moved across the street to the Town Common\, where it has been for 68 years. \nThe fair has grown (pun intended) over the years\, and now includes crafters\, artists\, music\, games\, books\, and activities for children – a real community event beyond just plants. \nProceeds from the plant and craft sale will support the work of The First Parish in Bedford\, Unitarian Universalist. In addition to other programs\, First Parish supports local initiatives including Bedford Embraces Diversity\, the Annual Tenacity Challenge at Bedford High School\, and the Bedford Family Connection.

DESCRIPTION:Do you love show tunes? Come celebrate the final service of the season at Worship @ The Well on Sunday\, May 19th\, as we use the music of Broadway in a service about love and acceptance. You’ll hear our band and guests perform music from Rent\, South Pacific\, Dear Evan Hansen\, Into the Woods\, Godspell\, and more! Rev. David Clark will be preaching. \nWorship at the Well is Hancock’s Sunday evening service at 5:00 pm in Clark Hall. Casual and tender\, personal and powerful. Communion is celebrated each week\, and joys and concerns are shared\, with an overall focus on community and connection. Music\, provided by the River Rock Band\, is diverse and ranges from roots/acoustic to jazz\, gospel\, Celtic\, world\, and more. The band has recorded two albums\, and their music can be heard on all the major streaming platforms.

Resilience is the key to surviving and thriving in this environment. \nThis workshop will explore concrete strategic\, operational\, financial\, and leadership strategies that nonprofit leaders and board members can implement to increase their organizations’ resilience amid unexpected forces. \nAfter this workshop\, attendees will be able to: \n– Assess the current state of their organization\, their vulnerabilities\, and how they might be addressed.\n– Engage the leadership team and board in building awareness and developing action plans.\n– Prioritize steps to increase resilience and develop strategic communication with key stakeholders. \nThe presenter will devote a significant amount of time to answering your questions. It also focuses on stabilizing and strengthening nonprofits to prepare them for new\, permanent leadership. \nDavid spent the first 20 years of his career as a management consultant\, marketing director\, and business executive in various computer software and retail organizations. He then spent six years as an 8th-grade math teacher\, following which he gained extensive consulting and operating leadership experience in nonprofits\, serving as Co-Chair of Community Action Partners\, Deputy Director of Teachers21\, and Managing Director of the UPCS Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Join Oceana and LexZeroWaste for a free screening of the new documentary “We’re All Plastic People Now\,” by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Rory Fielding on May 21 at 7:00 pm (EST) at the Lexington Community Center\, Room 139. The film asks the pertinent question: how much evidence do we need before we decide to take action? Following the film there will be time for a brief Q&A\, and participants will be invited to “take action” by writing postcards to their MA State Legislators asking them to support policies that will address the plastic pollution crisis this legislative session.
