SUMMARY:Art At 2300 Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Art At 2300 Gallery will open this Spring in Lexington as a pop-up gallery on private property with a multi-tiered series of events. We will provide a platform for adult and children artists to present their creations and experiences via 2 and 3-dimensional art. \nCreators of paintings\, gemstone jewelry\, woodwork\, ceramics\, stained glass\, and more will be invited to show and discuss their work. Items will be available for purchase. \nChildren will be provided with supplies to create art during each event. \nIn addition\, we plan to invite other art forms such as Yoga instructors to conduct a class and singers and musicians to perform. \nWe will invite Lexington and non-Lexington guest artists to participate\, which will bring visitors to Lexington from other communities\, thus offering exposure and promotion. \nAll events will be promoted online and offline\, in art magazines\, and by flyers in town stores and restaurants. Our expenses will be the promotion\, children’s art supplies\, and enhancing the display areas. \nLast Fall the event was so successful visitors requested that we continue such events. Visitors enjoyed speaking with the artists and especially showing their children the various art mediums\, even having children talk about their own art. \nOur goal is to promote artists and enrich the lives of all in our community. \nEvents will be listed on our website at: www.artat2300.com

SUMMARY:Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World - A Conversation With Journalist Henry Grabar
DESCRIPTION:The Lexington League of Women Voters\, with generous support from Town Transportation Manager Susan Barrett and League member and transportation activist Pamela Lyons\, is sponsoring an evening conversation with Henry Grabar\, author of the recent book: Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World. The event will be held at Estabrook Hall\, in the Cary Memorial Building\, at 6:00 pm on Thursday\, April 25\, 2024. \nA staff writer at Slate’s online site\, where he writes the Metropolis column on issues of housing\, transportation\, and the environment\, Henry Grabar is currently a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 2023 he published Paved Paradise\, which he describes as\, in part\, the story of how we destroyed our cities in search of more and more available parking and the people who helped make it so – the mall builders\, mobsters\, police\, and the politicians\, the garage magnates and community groups. There are new alternatives in the works for dealing with traffic and parking which he also presents in the book. \nThis topic is particularly pertinent now\, as Lexington looks to increase its housing stock\, and will be dealing with issues of siting and services. The program is free and open to the public\, and the League urges Lexington citizens to attend and join in the conversation. For more information\, contact League Convener Margaret Coppe at mecoppe@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Vance Gilbert at Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse series
DESCRIPTION:Vance Gilbert at Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse series \nApril 27\, 7:30 pm \nCan something be wry\, aching\, hysterical\, evocative\, provocative\, fun\, beautifully sung\, and consummately played all at once? That would be Vance Gilbert. \nAn integral part of the national folk scene\, Gilbert’s approach to the acoustic singer-songwriter idiom is significant. Gilbert’s compositions\, while frequently employing sophisticated melodies and harmonies that attest to his jazz roots\, remain sublime attestations to the storyteller’s craft. Many know Vance’s signature song\, “Unfamiliar Moon\,” which landed him in the second round of auditions of TV’s America’s Got Talent. Like all great artists\, Vance truly happens live. In fact he developed his reputation with his jaw-dropping\, diverse\, funny\, devastating\, and gorgeous live performances. \nVance exploded onto the scene in the early ’90s\, with buzz spreading quickly. Who was this multicultural arts teacher knocking them dead at open mics? After opening Shawn Colvin’s 1992 Fat City tour\, he took much of America by storm. “The voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god\,” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. \nVance has released 16 albums\, including Somerville (Live)\, and Side of the Road with Ellis Paul. His latest album\, The Mother of Trouble\, was released in May. \nWe have ADA accessible parking\, as well as ample free parking in our back parking lot. From there you can enter our back door and use our chair lift should you need it to take you right up to the door of Clark Hall. There is parking on both sides of Massachusetts Avenue\, and should you enter our front door\, an elevator is available to go up to Clark Hall. Our bathrooms are gender neutral and ADA accessible. \n(Please note\, our ticketing system only allows us to sell tickets one show at a time. Tickets for our Vance Gilbert show will go on sale after our March show! Visit our website at http://www.hancockchurch.org/coffeehouse)

SUMMARY:Recycling Lies and Plastic Problems: What I Learned from a Year of No Garbage
DESCRIPTION:Internationally published author and humorist Eve Schaub challenged her family to attempt the seemingly impossible: to live in the modern world\, for an entire year\, without creating any trash at all. The resulting memoir\, Year of No Garbage\, has been featured in the New Yorker\, and was described by Bill McKibben as filled with “humor and grace.” Schaub reveals shocking truths she learned along the way about garbage\, plastics\, and the recycling industry. This talk will trace the high and low points of Schaub’s family’s Zero Waste journey\, focusing on lessons learned and where we go from here. \nFollowing Eve’s presentation and Q&A\, we will hear from Maggie Peard\, Lexington’s Sustainability and Resilience Officer\, and Erica Bouchard Rabins\, Owner of Center Goods\, as we consider Lexington’s zero waste future. \nRegistration is required. \nPresented in partnership with Lexington Zero Waste and the Lexington Sustainability and Resilience Office. \nCopies of the author’s book will be available for purchase through Maxima Book Center. \nThis program is made possible by the generous donors to the Cary Library Foundation and LexZeroWaste members.

SUMMARY:Reading Into History: Book Chat on The Chinese Question by Mae Ngai
DESCRIPTION:The Gold Rush of 1849 brought scores of the hopeful to California\, both to mine the hills for treasure\, and to build the railroads that would connect the newly wealthy frontier to the rest of the country. Chinese immigrants made up a massive part of this labor force. As they entered the US and the rest of the Western workforce in record numbers\, however\, cultural clashes and racism led to “the Chinese question”: should Western countries allow Chinese immigration at all? In 1882\, the United States decided the answer was “no” with the Chinese Exclusion Act. Join us for a discussion led by a Book Chat member of this sweeping history by Mae Ngai\, who follows Chinese labor across five continents to show the connection between world economics and racism. \n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers. \nDoors open at 6:30\, and refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Cantemus Chorus Declares “love is love is love”
DESCRIPTION:Lexington High School’s Director of Choruses\, Jason Iannuzzi\, will conduct the 38-singer Cantemus Chamber Chorus in two Mother’s Day weekend concerts titled “love is love is love.” The program explores four forms of love: between parent and child\, for friends\, between lovers\, and love for humanity. Bach. Performances will be at St.Peter’s Church in Beverly on May 11 at 7:30 pm\, and St. Paul’s Church in Newburyport on May 12 at 4:00 pm. SUMMARY:V is for Victory: FDR’s Efforts to Prepare the US for War
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Bob Lewis\, Captain\, USN\, Retired \nBy June 1940\, France had fallen to the Nazi blitzkrieg\, and Hitler’s vision of world domination loomed large. Britain stood as the last bastion of resistance against Germany. Behind the scenes\, FDR was secretly working with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill\, planning the shipment of surplus war materials to Great Britain. He skillfully navigated the complex political landscape to prepare the United States for its eventual involvement in World War II. FDR\, a Democrat\, appointed pro-interventionist Republicans Henry Stimson and Frank Knox\, as Secretaries of War and the Navy. The groundwork laid between November 1940 and December 7\, 1941 – a full year before the attack on Pearl Harbor and our declaration of war against Germany and Japan – became the cornerstone for American participation in WWII. \nTo participate by Zoom\, go to carylibrary.org/events.
