SUMMARY:Reading Into History: Book Chat on Ida B. The Queen by Michelle Duster
DESCRIPTION:Ida B. Wells committed herself to the needs of those who did not have power. In the eyes of the FBI\, this made her a “dangerous negro agitator.” In the annals of history\, it makes her an icon. Ida B. the Queen tells the awe-inspiring story of a pioneering woman who was often overlooked and underestimated—a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for white passengers\, a woman who brought to light the horrors of lynching in America\, a woman who cofounded the NAACP. Written by Wells’s great-granddaughter Michelle Duster\, this “warm remembrance of a civil rights icon” (Kirkus Reviews) is a unique visual celebration of Wells’s life\, and of the Black experience. \nJoin us for an interactive discussion on this fascinating historical figure\, led by a Lexington Historical Society Book Chat member. Reading the book is encouraged but by no means required! Refreshments will be served\, and doors open at 6:30. \n$10 members\, $20 nonmembers.

SUMMARY:i3C | REIMAGINING OUR WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Mar 23 – Apr 21\, 2024 11 am – 5 pm\, Tue – Sun \nOpening Reception: Sun\, Mar 24\, 2024\, 2 – 4 pm \nCuratorial Statement: \nThe environmental crisis is multifactorial: consumerism\, pollution\, extreme weather\, loss of biodiversity\, and other catastrophes – too complex\, too intertwined\, but above all\, too urgent. A collective problem that requires collective solutions. As individuals\, we wonder\, “How can I contribute to the solution?” \nThe featured eco-minded artists\, members of i3C (inspiring Change for the Climate Crisis) Artists Group\, and guests\, respond by working with rejected materials\, such as beach debris\, plastic waste\, or repurposed textiles. They dare to reinvent the life of waste\, transforming these rejections of society into reminders of what we need to save. \nJoin our conversation- change is not only possible but also a necessary and powerful element for critical environmental transformation.

SUMMARY:Creating and Enhancing Native Bee Habitat in Your Garden with Heather Holm
DESCRIPTION:There is a great deal that home gardeners can do to provide habitat for our native bees without sacrificing other garden goals. When creating and managing thriving habitats for native bees\, many factors such as seasonal phenology\, nesting strategies\, and flower preferences must be considered – and with approximately 3\,600 species in North America (north of Mexico)\, there are many unique aspects to keep in mind when managing successful landscapes for bees. \nJoin Heather as she explores the nesting habitats\, life cycles\, pollen collection\, brood rearing\, and general characteristics of some of the most common native bees in eastern North America while highlighting the pollination of native plants and the mutualism between native plants and native bees. Learn about pollen specialists\, the presentation of floral resources\, and how the physical characteristics of bees can influence their effectiveness as pollinators. Heather will also discuss ways to manage gardens and other small landscapes to enhance bee diversity\, plant selection considerations\, and ultimately how to think like a bee! \nAbout Heather \nHeather Holm is a pollinator conservationist and award-winning author of four books: Pollinators of Native Plants (2014)\, Bees (2017)\, Wasps (2021)\, and Common Native Bees of the Eastern United States (2022). Heather’s expertise includes the interactions between native pollinators and native plants\, and the natural history and biology of native bees and predatory wasps. Her work has been featured in the New York Times\, Minneapolis Star Tribune\, and many local publications. Heather is also an accomplished photographer and her pollinator photos are frequently featured in print and electronic publications. \nPresented by Lexington Living Landscapes with generous funding from the Lexington Field and Garden Club

SUMMARY:Film Screening - Below the Belt
DESCRIPTION:The Lexington Community Center and the Lexington Public Health Department\, along with the Tri-Ton Coalition\, which includes Burlington and Wilmington\, is offering a free public viewing of the movie “Below the Belt” (only available through screenings). Scheduled for Tuesday\, April 2 nd at 6:30pm\, the event was intentionally planned as part of National Public Health Week\, which is focusing on Women’s Health in 2024. \nLexington\, often a leader in social issues\, is screening this movie at the local theatre\, Lexington Venue\, which is the first public viewing in the Boston-metro area since the film was launched by PBS in July 2023. \n“Below the Belt” increases awareness of an issue in women’s health – the often confusing and delayed diagnosis of endometriosis\, which can take up to ten years and in the interim cause fertility challenges. This is partly because the disease impacts most systems in the body including reproductive\, pulmonary\, cardiovascular\, muscular\, and skeletal\, and can be confusing for medical professionals\, largely since little education exists on the subject. One in ten women have “endo”\, as it is commonly referred by most patients\, and those women lose an average of 10 hours of productivity a week in school or at work. \nProduced by Shannon Cohn\, an award-winning filmmaker and social impact strategist\, this film was created to utilize storytelling to change hearts and inspire minds. Executive producers include a long list of Hollywood celebrities and nationally recognized politicians including Senator Elizabeth Warren\, Orin Hatch (whose granddaughter is featured)\, Rosario Dawson\, Corrine Foxx\, and Mae Whitman. Additionally\, the film has several screening partners in the medical community\, including Harvard Medical School\, Princeton University\, Yale University\, The Moorehouse School of Medicine\, National Institutes of Health\, the Mayo Clinic\, and the National Association of School Nurses\, plus the academic community including Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the World Economic Forum. \nThe event will be held on April 2nd at 6:30\, with a screening of the 1-hour movie\, followed by a Q&A featuring local endometriosis surgeon Dr. Malcolm Mackenzie (known by his patients as “Kip”). Reservations can be made using this link. SPACE IS LIMITED. \nWatch the trailer \nTo learn about other events during National Public Health Week\, contact the Lexington Public Health Department at 1625 Massachusetts Avenue\, Lexington\, MA 02420 or 781-698-4533.

SUMMARY:Resolving the Race(ism) Dilemma
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this interactive virtual event on Friday\, April 5th (2024) from 7:00 – 8:30 pm EST\, and on Saturday\, April 6th (2024) from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm EST. This event promises to be a significant milestone in our shared journey toward understanding and dismantling the belief in “race” and the reality of racism. \nThe “Resolving the Race/ism Dilemma” conference will feature in-depth discussions challenging the traditional notions of “race” as an immutable aspect of human identity. We will explore how social constructions of racism (i.e.\, race/ism) and historical contingencies have shaped our perceptions of so-called racial differences\, fueling and upholding inequalities. Our collective exploration will not only question how so-called racial identities are imposed but also celebrate the fluidity and richness of cultural\, ethnic\, individual\, and collective diversity beyond so-called racial categorizations. \nBy fostering transformative dialogues\, we aim to envision and contribute to the creation of a society that ends race/ism\, celebrating the shared humanity of all its members. This event is not merely a conference. It is a commitment to a more inclusive\, just\, and understanding world. The event will have an opening evening session on April 5 from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm EST followed by a rich array of content on April 6 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World - A Conversation With Journalist Henry Grabar
DESCRIPTION:The Lexington League of Women Voters\, with generous support from Town Transportation Manager Susan Barrett and League member and transportation activist Pamela Lyons\, is sponsoring an evening conversation with Henry Grabar\, author of the recent book: Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World. The event will be held at Estabrook Hall\, in the Cary Memorial Building\, at 6:00 pm on Thursday\, April 25\, 2024. \nA staff writer at Slate’s online site\, where he writes the Metropolis column on issues of housing\, transportation\, and the environment\, Henry Grabar is currently a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 2023 he published Paved Paradise\, which he describes as\, in part\, the story of how we destroyed our cities in search of more and more available parking and the people who helped make it so – the mall builders\, mobsters\, police\, and the politicians\, the garage magnates and community groups. There are new alternatives in the works for dealing with traffic and parking which he also presents in the book. \nThis topic is particularly pertinent now\, as Lexington looks to increase its housing stock\, and will be dealing with issues of siting and services. The program is free and open to the public\, and the League urges Lexington citizens to attend and join in the conversation. For more information\, contact League Convener Margaret Coppe at mecoppe@gmail.com.
