SUMMARY:Nibbling on Native Plants in Your Back Yard and Beyond with Russ Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Native plants aren’t just for insects; many people find them delicious too! Plants that can nourish both groups provide an additional incentive for us to plant them in our yards and landscapes\, benefiting all. Join Russ Cohen\, expert forager and author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten\, for a virtual tour of at least two dozen species of native edible wild plants suitable for adding to your own landscape\, or nibbling on as you encounter them in other locales. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided\, along with details about edible portion(s)\, season(s) of availability\, preparation method(s)\, and propagation. \nUntil his retirement in June of 2015\, Russ Cohen’s “day job” was serving as the Rivers Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration. Now Russ has more time to pursue his passion for connecting to nature via his taste buds and assisting others in doing the same. Russ operates a small nursery outside of Boston\, where he grows and keeps hundreds of edible native plants\, and collaborates with a wide variety of landowning organizations (including the Town of Lexington) to plant them in appropriate places on their properties – a modern-day Johnny Appleseed for wild edibles.

SUMMARY:Melody MacDuffee and the Story of Soul of Somanya
DESCRIPTION:Beadesigner International (BDI/The New England Bead Society) is pleased to present a lecture and workshop series with Melody MacDuffee\, co-founder and director of Soul of Somanya in Ghana. Join us as Melody MacDuffee tells of her journey with Soul of Somanya\, which all began when a group of Krobo artisans came across an article in Bead & Button magazine in which she was featured. They emailed her to ask if she could come to Ghana and teach them her skills. Six months later\, lugging six suitcases filled with jewelry-making tools and supplies\, Melody was on her way to Ghana. Today\, in an environment where job prospects are quite limited\, Soul of Somanya artisans earn a steady\, living wage in a healthy\, pleasant working environment doing something they enjoy- creating jewelry and other beaded products. \nThere will be two opportunities to meet Melody\, hear the story of how this all came to be\, and have an opportunity to see and shop hand-crafted products from Ghana. First\, on February 21\, during a Zoom presentation at BDI’s monthly meeting\, and then on February 24 for an in-person workshop and open beading session\, our monthly Bead-In\, at the Lexington Community Center. Please visit our website (https://www.beadesignerintl.org/) for more details and to register for these events. The lecture and Bead-In are free to members and first-time guests. All proceeds from sales go directly to the workers at Soul of Somanya. \nMelody MacDuffee is the author of four books and five wire-work booklets. She has taught her distinctive jewelry-making techniques all over the U.S. and as far away as Morocco and West Africa. She is also the co-founder and director of Soul of Somanya (https://www.soulofsomanya.net/)\, a fair-trade non-profit that offers paid training and steady\, living wage employment to disadvantaged Ghanaian artisans.

SUMMARY:Antje Duvekot to perform at Harmony on the Green coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Antje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. Two of her albums found her working with Richard Shindell as producer\, as well as other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined festivals in Scotland and Denmark. \nThe Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign\, including a Super Bowl audience. Neil Dorfsman\, producer for Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nAntje has played the TEDMED conference in San Diego. CNN said of the experience\, “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot played her guitar and sang about her grandmother’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ she sang.” \nAntje’s most recent album\, New Wild West was released in September\, 2023. \nHarmony on the Green is in Clark Hall at Hancock United Church of Christ\, 1912 Massachusetts Avenue. Parking is available on both sides of Massachusetts Avenue. In addition free parking\, including ADA accessible spots\, are available in our back parking lot. Our building is ADA accessible\, with accessible single user bathrooms\, and a chair lift at our back entrance that goes directly up to Clark Hall. If you enter through our front door\, there is an elevator that will take you upstairs\, and you’ll find Clark Hall down the hall and around the corner.

SUMMARY:Rainbow Artists
DESCRIPTION:This has been a difficult time for many in the LGBTQIA+ community. This week we heard a vicious anti-trans tirade from a public commenter at the School Committee meeting. While two candidates for School Committee (Kathleen Lenihan and Deepika Sawhney) have expressed strong support for the Serious Talks curriculum\, the third candidate refused to even respond to LexPride’s questions for candidates. More broadly\, many of us are grieving the death of Nex Benedict — and trying to navigate numerous anti-trans (and anti-LGBTQIA+) laws in states where family and friends live. \n\nIn the midst of all this\, we need some queer joy! LexPride invites LGBTQIA+ people and allies to join us for an all ages Rainbow Artists event tomorrow (March 2)\, 1-3pm\, at the Lexington Community Center (dining room). Join us for creative expression\, art\, and social time in a warmly supportive setting. Folks can also register for our Spring session of Rainbow Artists for youth ages 8-11\, 12-15\, and 16-19.

SUMMARY:Gallery Reception - Munroe Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Arches\, Arrangement\, Gesture by Joanna Muehleisen is on display now! \nArches – This traditional architectural motif considers liminal space or a passage through. \nArrangement – Arranging and re-arranging of everyday objects explores the intrinsic beauty of simple domestic acts of placement and order. \nGesture – With an immersion of energy\, the gesture captures the physical sensations of how the body both holds and releases. \nThis collection of Joanna Muehleisen’s work focuses on three particular themes: arches\, arrangement\, and gesture. This way of creating and exploring multiple subjects at one time allows each theme to dialogue with the others and reflect on them differently. \nJoin the artist for the show’s opening reception on Friday\, March 8\, 2024.

SUMMARY:A Life Through Music\, An Evening With Jeff Leonard and Friends
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, researchers have touted the benefits of studying music throughout a person’s lifespan to improve memory\, executive function\, language acquisition\, and brain plasticity. But what about joy\, passion\, creativity\, and connections to others? This session will showcase the fascinating stories and experiences of several alumni of the Lexington Public Schools. Whether music has become their vocation––or an important avocation––they will share how studying and performing music has deeply enriched and shaped their lives. We encourage middle and high school students and their parents to attend as they consider the next steps in their journeys. \nFrom 1983 to 2017\, Jeffrey Leonard served as director of the LHS bands\, jazz program\, and Performing Arts Coordinator. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music\, an Adjunct Professor at Boston University\, and co-director of the Youth Jazz Orchestra at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division.

SUMMARY:Reading Into History: Book Chat on Ida B. The Queen by Michelle Duster
DESCRIPTION:Ida B. Wells committed herself to the needs of those who did not have power. In the eyes of the FBI\, this made her a “dangerous negro agitator.” In the annals of history\, it makes her an icon. Ida B. the Queen tells the awe-inspiring story of a pioneering woman who was often overlooked and underestimated—a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for white passengers\, a woman who brought to light the horrors of lynching in America\, a woman who cofounded the NAACP. Written by Wells’s great-granddaughter Michelle Duster\, this “warm remembrance of a civil rights icon” (Kirkus Reviews) is a unique visual celebration of Wells’s life\, and of the Black experience. \nJoin us for an interactive discussion on this fascinating historical figure\, led by a Lexington Historical Society Book Chat member. Reading the book is encouraged but by no means required! Refreshments will be served\, and doors open at 6:30. \n$10 members\, $20 nonmembers.
