SUMMARY:John Quincy Adams: Reluctant Abolitionist\, at the Lexington Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:As a Harvard alumnus\, diplomat\, U.S. President\, member of Congress and attorney before the Supreme Court\, John Quincy Adams had a unique relationship with slavery. Prickly and curmudgeonly\, he danced with abolitionists\, but never became one himself. However\, Adams did harbor an intense hatred for the arguments of Southern slaveholders\, and eventually found himself in the center of America’s greatest struggle. \nInformed by Adams’ revealing and often tormented musings from his vast diary\, hear from local historian Jeffrey Denman as he weaves a unique and gripping account of John Quincy Adams’ battle with slavery\, while exploring the many fault lines in American society that led to the Civil War. Included are the dramatic showdowns in the House of Representatives and Supreme Court\, as well as Adams’ attempts at outsmarting Southern politicians and his efforts to keep slavery at the forefront of Congressional activities. \nCopies of Denman’s new book\, John Quincy Adams: Reluctant Abolitionist\, will be available for sale. \n$10 Lexington Historical Society members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:White Lotus: A Live Musical Performance with the film “The Goddess”
DESCRIPTION:Composer\, vocalist\, and instrumentalist Min Xiao-Fen is one of the world’s leading performers on the pipa\, the stringed lute that has been an integral part of Eastern musical culture for millennia. Her latest album\, White Lotus\, engages with a relatively more recent art form\, presenting a reimagined soundtrack to director Wu Yonggang’s 1934 silent film The Goddess. In a duet with the innovative guitarist Rez Abbasi\, Min infuses spirited life and soulful nuance into actress Ruan Lingyu’s iconic but still controversial film portrait. Min will employ an array of traditional Chinese instrumentation and her exquisite voice to live score an English language-subtitled screening of this screen gem\, considered one of the best-known films of China’s cinematic golden age.

SUMMARY:Nibbling on Native Plants in Your Back Yard and Beyond with Russ Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Native plants aren’t just for insects; many people find them delicious too! Plants that can nourish both groups provide an additional incentive for us to plant them in our yards and landscapes\, benefiting all. Join Russ Cohen\, expert forager and author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten\, for a virtual tour of at least two dozen species of native edible wild plants suitable for adding to your own landscape\, or nibbling on as you encounter them in other locales. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided\, along with details about edible portion(s)\, season(s) of availability\, preparation method(s)\, and propagation. \nUntil his retirement in June of 2015\, Russ Cohen’s “day job” was serving as the Rivers Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration. Now Russ has more time to pursue his passion for connecting to nature via his taste buds and assisting others in doing the same. Russ operates a small nursery outside of Boston\, where he grows and keeps hundreds of edible native plants\, and collaborates with a wide variety of landowning organizations (including the Town of Lexington) to plant them in appropriate places on their properties – a modern-day Johnny Appleseed for wild edibles.

SUMMARY:Melody MacDuffee and the Story of Soul of Somanya
DESCRIPTION:Beadesigner International (BDI/The New England Bead Society) is pleased to present a lecture and workshop series with Melody MacDuffee\, co-founder and director of Soul of Somanya in Ghana. Join us as Melody MacDuffee tells of her journey with Soul of Somanya\, which all began when a group of Krobo artisans came across an article in Bead & Button magazine in which she was featured. They emailed her to ask if she could come to Ghana and teach them her skills. Six months later\, lugging six suitcases filled with jewelry-making tools and supplies\, Melody was on her way to Ghana. Today\, in an environment where job prospects are quite limited\, Soul of Somanya artisans earn a steady\, living wage in a healthy\, pleasant working environment doing something they enjoy- creating jewelry and other beaded products. \nThere will be two opportunities to meet Melody\, hear the story of how this all came to be\, and have an opportunity to see and shop hand-crafted products from Ghana. First\, on February 21\, during a Zoom presentation at BDI’s monthly meeting\, and then on February 24 for an in-person workshop and open beading session\, our monthly Bead-In\, at the Lexington Community Center. Please visit our website (https://www.beadesignerintl.org/) for more details and to register for these events. The lecture and Bead-In are free to members and first-time guests. All proceeds from sales go directly to the workers at Soul of Somanya. \nMelody MacDuffee is the author of four books and five wire-work booklets. She has taught her distinctive jewelry-making techniques all over the U.S. and as far away as Morocco and West Africa. She is also the co-founder and director of Soul of Somanya (https://www.soulofsomanya.net/)\, a fair-trade non-profit that offers paid training and steady\, living wage employment to disadvantaged Ghanaian artisans.

SUMMARY:Antje Duvekot to perform at Harmony on the Green coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Antje has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, the prestigious\, Kerrville (TX) “Best New Folk Award” and in one of the nation’s top music markets\, she won the Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Act”\, three of the top prizes in the singer songwriter world. Two of her albums found her working with Richard Shindell as producer\, as well as other “folk royalty” such as John Gorka\, Lucy Kaplancky and Mark Erelli. \nAntje has extensive touring experience\, criss-crossing the US and Europe many times. She is a compelling live performer and has been invited to play some of the top festivals including The Newport Folk Festival as well as the Mountain Stage\, Philadelphia and Kerrville Festivals. Internationally\, she’s headlined festivals in Scotland and Denmark. \nThe Bank of America featured Antje’s song “Merry Go Round” in a national TV advertising campaign\, including a Super Bowl audience. Neil Dorfsman\, producer for Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and Sting says\, “When I first heard Antje I knew I was witnessing something very special. She creates an entire\, detailed world in verse\, and takes you there with beautiful and understated melody. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an unpoetic and ‘in your face’ world\, she is lyrical and subtle” \nAntje has played the TEDMED conference in San Diego. CNN said of the experience\, “Then\, this morning\, the tone of the conference turned from intellectual to deeply emotional when Antje Duvekot played her guitar and sang about her grandmother’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease. Duvekot’s song was all too relatable for those of us who have watched loved ones slip away. ‘And Anna tries to form a thought / But at the end she’s forgotten where she started from / There’s something she would like to say / But the words in her head seem to have got away’ she sang.” \nAntje’s most recent album\, New Wild West was released in September\, 2023. \nHarmony on the Green is in Clark Hall at Hancock United Church of Christ\, 1912 Massachusetts Avenue. Parking is available on both sides of Massachusetts Avenue. In addition free parking\, including ADA accessible spots\, are available in our back parking lot. Our building is ADA accessible\, with accessible single user bathrooms\, and a chair lift at our back entrance that goes directly up to Clark Hall. If you enter through our front door\, there is an elevator that will take you upstairs\, and you’ll find Clark Hall down the hall and around the corner.

SUMMARY:Rainbow Artists
DESCRIPTION:This has been a difficult time for many in the LGBTQIA+ community. This week we heard a vicious anti-trans tirade from a public commenter at the School Committee meeting. While two candidates for School Committee (Kathleen Lenihan and Deepika Sawhney) have expressed strong support for the Serious Talks curriculum\, the third candidate refused to even respond to LexPride’s questions for candidates. More broadly\, many of us are grieving the death of Nex Benedict — and trying to navigate numerous anti-trans (and anti-LGBTQIA+) laws in states where family and friends live. \n\nIn the midst of all this\, we need some queer joy! LexPride invites LGBTQIA+ people and allies to join us for an all ages Rainbow Artists event tomorrow (March 2)\, 1-3pm\, at the Lexington Community Center (dining room). Join us for creative expression\, art\, and social time in a warmly supportive setting. Folks can also register for our Spring session of Rainbow Artists for youth ages 8-11\, 12-15\, and 16-19.
