Suicide prevention isn’t just about responding to those who are struggling or who we’re concerned about. It’s about empowering entire communities to know how to help someone at risk and providing them with the tools to recognize warning signs and take action. \nDeveloped by the creators of SOS Signs of Suicide\, a trusted evidence-based suicide prevention program\, Suicide Prevention for Communities is a facilitator-led training that uses video and interactive discussions to help adults build the confidence and skills to talk openly and effectively about suicide. \nThis adult training is designed to engage diverse audiences and is applicable across a range of personal and professional roles. The content emphasizes that anyone can play a role in supporting someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. It also highlights the effectiveness of restricting access to lethal means and provides information on local and national mental health resources. \nKey Learnings:\n• A general understanding of suicide and why safe language is important\n• How to recognize warning signs and risk factors for suicide\n• How to use the ACT (Acknowledge\, Care\, Tell) framework when someone is struggling with thoughts of suicide\n• Ways to keep a person safe while connecting them to qualified resources

DESCRIPTION:Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Concerts is thrilled to kick off its 5th season with the terrific Ari Hest. Hest has crafted a unique path in music – independently building a loyal following through relentless college touring\, then on to major label albums\, and then reimagining listener engagement through fan-driven projects like “52” and his Patreon-powered “The Treehouse Project”. \nA Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter (Best Folk Album\, 2017) who began his career two decades ago\, he’s performed both in the U.S. and abroad with artists like The Indigo Girls\, Martin Sexton\, Judy Collins. and Suzanne Vega. Many of Ari’s songs have appeared on TV and film – The Path\, The Lincoln Lawyer\, Private Practice\, Army Wives\, and One Tree Hill\, to name a few. \nAri’s newest endeavor\, The Treehouse Project\, has him writing\, recording\, and releasing a song on his Patreon every two weeks since early 2022. Based on the votes of his subscribers\, he remixes the 10 favorite songs from each year and releases an album. The project is currently in its fourth year and is approaching 100 original songs. \nOur concerts are still just $25 (plus ticketing fees) and have\, as always\, a “pay what you can” feature so that everyone can enjoy live music!

DESCRIPTION:Po-Shen Loh – October 24\, 2026\, 8 p.m. \n \nIn a world where artificial intelligence can now complete many of the tasks once used to measure academic achievement\, Carnegie Mellon University professor\, social entrepreneur\, and educational innovator Po-Shen Loh invites families\, educators\, students\, and community leaders to consider a powerful question: What skills will matter most for the next generation? \nDrawing from his experiences speaking with families and educators in more than 100 cities each year\, teaching in classrooms\, and learning directly from students\, parents\, teachers\, and AI innovators\, Loh offers a hopeful vision for preparing young people not only to adapt to change\, but also to lead with purpose. Rather than focusing only on grades\, test scores\, or memorization\, Loh makes the case for nurturing the deeply human qualities technology cannot replace: critical thinking\, creativity\, communication\, courage\, leadership\, curiosity\, and the ability to solve unfamiliar problems. Through mathematics as a medium\, he shows how students can build confidence by thinking deeply\, sharing ideas boldly\, and approaching challenges with imagination rather than fear. A passionate\, engaging\, inspirational entertainer and concert artist\, Reggie is recognized for focusing new energy on the important role of music in the discourse for inclusion and the struggle for human rights\, using the lessons of history as a base. As an expert on the music of the Underground Railroad and the Modern Civil Rights Movement\, he is at home on stage as performer\, lecturer\, or leading discussion in seminars or in the classroom. Known for over 40 years as one-half of the eminently prominent duo\, Kim & Reggie Harris\, Reggie continues to criss-cross the country\, carrying the message of joy\, unity\, tolerance\, and peace through the powerful medium of live music. SUMMARY:Cary Lecture Series: The Bittersweet History of Chocolate: What Makes Chocolate Good? with Carla D. Martin
DESCRIPTION:Carla D. Martin – November 21\, 2026 8 p.m. \n \nSocial anthropologist Dr. Carla D. Martin will trace the bittersweet history of chocolate — from Mayan temples\, to the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, to the rise of iconic brands like Hershey’s and Nestlé\, to grueling labor on cocoa farms today. For centuries\, the interests of U.S. and European chocolate makers have often diverged from those of cocoa farmers and producers. As she examines the cocoa-chocolate industry\, Martin highlights the often-conflicting goals that create gaps in social and environmental responsibility. Many artisanal chocolate makers today market the social values underlying their production. When it comes to chocolate\, good taste is paramount\, but how do we measure its social goodness\, and what value does this add for consumers? \nCarla D. Martin is Lecturer and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies in Harvard University’s Department of African and African American Studies and Founder and Board President of the nonprofit Institute for Cacao and Chocolate Research. She has published in numerous academic journals\, most recently on the ethics of labor in cocoa and chocolate. Martin has received awards for excellence in teaching and research\, and her public scholarship has been featured by the National Park Service\, Harvard Museums\, and National Public Radio. DESCRIPTION:In 2008\, the Lexington High School Cross Country / Track & Field program hosted its first annual “Alumni Race” on the same\, nearly all-road course the team has called home since 1970. Over the last 18 years\, with the support of athletes\, coaches\, and parent volunteers our tradition has grown into an event that allows us to share the sport we love with the larger community. Our track family invites you to join us the Saturday after Thanksgiving\, November 28th at 9am\, for the Lexington Legacy 5k run/walk. All proceeds will go to support the nearly 250 boys and girls on the LHS Cross Country / Track & Field team.

DESCRIPTION:Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Concerts welcomes the critically acclaimed and incredibly eclectic Floyd’s Row to our 5th season! \nFrom traditional English music to early music to Dylan tunes\, the eclectic Floyd’s Row performs a unique concert drawing from English tradition to create a new sound that is all their own. Founded in 2012 in Oxford\, UK by Chris Ferebee (mandolin\, guitar & cittern)\, Alistair Anderson (English concertina & Northumbrian pipes)\, Andrew Arceci (viola da gamba & double bass)\, Floyds Row has developed into a folk-classical collective\, pulling from early\, folk\, and classical idioms. What began as an Oxford-based project has blossomed into a touring ensemble on notable stages across the UK and U.S.\, with a critically appreciated album that merges chamber elegance with folk resonance. The name “Floyds Row” comes from a historic street in Oxford that runs beside the Faculty of Music of the University of Oxford. \nOur concerts are still just $25 (plus ticketing fees) and have\, as always\, a “pay what you can” feature so that everyone can enjoy live music!

SUMMARY:Cary Lecture Series: Why Women Won with Claudia Goldin
DESCRIPTION:Claudia Goldin – May 8\, 2027\, 8 p.m. \n \nProfessor Claudia Goldin was awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics “for having advanced our understanding of women’s labor market outcomes.” She will explore how we moved from a world in which discrimination against women was not recognized as an issue\, women were routinely and legally fired when they married or became pregnant\, and they often couldn’t get a credit card or legally keep their name — to the world we live in now\, however imperfect. Women won workplace and reproductive rights fifty years ago. But why have women never achieved equality in the workplace and equity in their homes\, and how can they in a politically fractured nation?  \nClaudia Goldin is the Samuel W. Morris University Professor and the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University. An economic historian and labor economist\, her research covers topics including the female labor force\, the gender gap in earnings\, income inequality\, technological change\, education\, and immigration. Most of her groundbreaking research interprets the present through the lens of the past and explores the origins of current issues of concern. She has held numerous positions in economics\, holds many honorary degrees\, and is the author of a variety of books and articles.
