SUMMARY:The WBUR Festival
DESCRIPTION:The WBUR Festival\, happening on Friday\, May 29 and Saturday\, May 30\, 2026\, will feature two days of captivating conversations\, podcast tapings\, musical performances\, and a lively street scene up and down Commonwealth Avenue. \n“The WBUR Festival is serious stuff and wicked fun\, too\,” said Margaret Low\, CEO of WBUR. “Last year was such a smashing success\, we couldn’t wait to do it again. We think of the Festival as our love letter to Boston and beyond — a chance to give back to the people\, the city and the region who fuel WBUR.” \nAlong with WBUR hosts including Meghna Chakrabarti\, Tiziana Dearing\, Indira Lakshmanan\, Lisa Mullins and Robin Young\, the first wave of speakers includes: \n\nJosé Andrés\, chef\, founder of World Central Kitchen — a nonprofit that provides meals in response to global crises — and best-selling author of a new book “Spain My Way\,” coming out in May. Andrés holds two Michelin stars and has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.\nMarty Baron\, former executive editor of The Washington Post and The Boston Globe. Under his leadership\, newsrooms have won 18 Pulitzer Prizes\, including 11 at the Post.\nJohn Bolton\, former United States national security advisor to President Donald Trump\, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and author of “The Room Where It Happened.”\nKatherine Maher\, president and CEO of NPR and former chief executive of the Wikimedia Foundation.\nSamantha Power\, New York Times bestselling author\, Pulitzer Prize winner and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.\nBryan Stevenson\, public interest lawyer\, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative — a human rights organization in Montgomery\, Ala. — and author of the bestselling memoir “Just Mercy.”\nNicholas Thompson\, CEO of The Atlantic and host of the podcast The Most Interesting Thing in AI. His 2025 memoir “The Running Ground” was recognized as a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year.\nAnd numerous public media friends including musician and host Jad Abumrad\, founder of WNYC’s Radiolab; Allison Aubrey\, NPR health and science correspondent and founding host of Life Kit; Mary Louise Kelly\, co-host of NPR’s All Things Considered and host of the Sources & Methods podcast; and Sam Sanders\, host of KCRW’s The Sam Sanders Show and one of the founding hosts of Vibe Check\, The NPR Politics Podcast and It’s Been A Minute.\nSee additional speakers confirmed so far and get tickets at wburfestival.org.\n\nIn addition to its speaker lineup\, The WBUR Festival will feature a range of community-centered activities. The free street fair open to everyone will return on Saturday\, May 30 with more space and more vendors\, including the Found Boston market with 80 vintage sellers — twice as many as last year. Families can enjoy an all-new Kids Zone and live performances\, including dance lessons with Salsa y Control and entertainment from the WBUR Makers Jake Blount and Kimaya Diggs. Attendees can also help create a massive mural — a guided\, paint-by-numbers community art project designed to bring festivalgoers together and create a shared masterpiece. \nOur Partners \nThe WBUR Festival is made possible in part by the generous support of many civic and cultural institutions. WBUR is especially thankful to our premier sponsors: Takeda\, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Boston Symphony Orchestra; and to our supporting sponsors: The Huntington\, The Mehrotra Institute\, Vivo Performing Arts\, Hartney Greymont\, The Eliot Hotel\, The Trustees\, Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, Bartlett Tree Experts and Boston University Fitness & Recreation Center. DESCRIPTION:Illuminate Heritage: Lightscapes of Lexington\, Honoring Lexington’s Citizen Heroes\nBy Jiawei Liu\, Lexington High School \nLooking for a fun\, meaningful and memorable way to spend a summer night? \nOn May 30\, students from the Youth STEAM Initiative will present Illuminate Heritage: Lightscapes of Lexington\, an immersive projection mapping experience at the Lexington Depot from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. \nUsing light\, animation\, and real community imagery\, this student-created show will transform local architecture into a living story\, one that shines a spotlight on citizen heroes\, from important historical figures to the heroes among us today. \nWho Are Lexington’s Heroes?\nThrough the theme “Step Forward”\, the show strives to ask a simple and powerful question: What makes a hero? \nThe show will provide a both humble and profound answer: A hero is someone who chooses to step forward and makes a difference. \nThrough a sequence of visual scenes\, the program traces this journey: \n\nA quiet moment when something is needed\nA decision to act\nReal moments of service\, creativity\, and leadership\nThe lasting impact on others\nAnd the ripple effect that continues through the community\n\nThese stories are drawn from real life in Lexington\, featuring volunteers\, cultural organizations\, students\, families\, and neighbors whose everyday actions shape the town profoundly. \nA Collective Story\, Told in Light\nRather than celebrating a select few\, Illuminate Heritage Night reveals something deeper: \nAn entire community where the everyday actions of many add up to create something meaningful and lasting. Audiences will see: \n\nChildren making art and imagining new possibilities\nStudents designing\, building\, and innovating through STEAM\nCultural groups sharing traditions and connecting communities\nResidents coming together in events\, celebrations\, and service\n\nEach moment is a reminder that heroism is powerful and important\, but not rare\, and it can be woven into daily life. \nWhat to Expect\n\nA powerful fusion of light\, art\, history\, and technology\nStunning architectural projection mapping set to a relaxed summer evening atmosphere\nCarefully crafted animations and real imagery from the Lexington community\nStories that honor the people who quietly and consistently make a difference\nA shared experience that invites everyone to reflect: What role can I play?\n\nAn Invitation\nTo conclude the evening\, the Youth STEAM Initiative will present one last message\, this time for the audience: \nIt all starts with one step.\nWhat will you do?\nWho will you help? \nBecause in Lexington\, the next hero is not someone else—\nit might be you. \nJoin us on May 30 and see our community in a whole new light. \nLearn more at Illuminate Heritage Project Website \nNominate a Community Hero\nKnow some group or someone whose everyday actions make Lexington stronger? SUMMARY:Global Voices in Verse
DESCRIPTION:Monthly poetry event where participants read poems by other poets\, celebrating diverse voices and cultures while welcoming even non-poets to share their heritage. We are honored to have Arlington Poet Laureate Teresa Cader as our chief guest. \n\n\nGlobal Voices in Verse is a monthly poetry gathering that celebrates the richness of global poetic traditions. This event provides a platform for cultural exchange through poetry\, inviting participants to read and share poems by poets from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Unlike traditional poetry readings\, this initiative encourages both poets and non-poets to engage with poetry beyond their own experiences\, fostering a deeper appreciation of different literary traditions. By bringing together voices from around the world\, the event highlights the power of poetry as a bridge between cultures. \nParticipants select a poem—whether from a well-known poet or a lesser-known voice—and present it in its original language\, followed by a discussion or translation to make it accessible to a wider audience. This format not only promotes linguistic diversity but also allows attendees to explore the historical\, social\, and emotional contexts of various poetic works. By engaging with poetry in this way\, Global Voices in Verse cultivates a welcoming space where literature becomes a shared experience\, inspiring cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.
