SUMMARY:Maxima Book Center Presents QUEEN BESS: A Tudor Comes to Save America
DESCRIPTION:–In-conversation event with novelist Maria Vetrano features Melissa Ludtke\, pioneer in sports journalism and author of Locker Room Talk \nWhat’s the best way to rescue American democracy? Imagine a near future in which a female tech billionaire with a social conscience launches an audacious plan to rescue America—and her company—from the despotic president of the United States\, and you have Maria Vetrano’s debut novel\, QUEEN BESS: A Tudor Comes to Save America (10/15/24 by Regalo Press). Sounds so implausible\, right? Except that some of the plot points in QUEEN BESS have already come true. \nVetrano will explore her satirical Sci-Fi fantasy with Melissa Ludtke\, an award-winning journalist and author of Locker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside (8/16/24 Rutgers University Press)\, on May 13\, 2025\, at 7:00 p.m. at Maxima Book Center in Lexington\, Mass. \nQUEEN BESS introduces readers to Dakota Wynfred\, a tech billionaire with a social conscience who lives in Cambridge and works in Charlestown. Dakota is convinced that the only way to save American democracy—and her cybersecurity company—from the US president who is setting fire to the Constitution is to enlist a time-traveling Elizabeth Tudor. The action races ahead as Dakota and her hand-picked cohorts prepare Elizabeth for a 2028 presidential run. \n“What if a brilliant\, battle-tested\, and socially astute leader—who just happens to have lived more than four centuries ago—were our best candidate for president because she could view twenty-first-century US politics from a completely fresh perspective?” said Maria Vetrano. “That person would be Elizabeth Tudor\, who ruled England for forty-five years by masterfully managing conflicting religious and political interests. \n“In our near future\, Elizabeth would rely on her experience to govern capably\, despite the maelstrom of partisan politics in which she would find herself. That premise—as well as Elizabeth’s drive to improve the quality of life for her people\, so they would love her above all the presidents in history—makes her a formidable power-player unlike any other\,” Vetrano said. \n“With deft storytelling\, novelist Maria Vetrano beckons us to suspend our skepticism about time travel as she transports us into Tudor England\, and then\, in the delightful company of the time-traveled Queen Elizabeth\, aka ‘Bess\,’ she sweeps us into the swirl of our 2027 presidential campaign\,” said author Melissa Ludtke. “While our current political reality in America is fraught with peril\, Vetrano’s political commentary is bold\, funny\, and ultimately optimistic.” \nAbout Maxima Book Center \nFounded in 2021\, Maxima Book Center is located at 1717 Mass. Ave.\, Lexington\, Mass. For more information\, visit https://www.maximacenter.com/ or call: (781) 457-6185. \nAbout QUEEN BESS: A Tudor Comes to Save America \nQUEEN BESS is published in print and eBook versions by Regalo Press\, a firm that unites philanthropy with the business of book publishing\, by making a donation to a charity of the author’s choice on every deal. At Vetrano’s request\, Regalo Press has made a charitable donation to Massachusetts-based Silent Spring Institute\, an independent research organization dedicated to uncovering the environmental causes of breast cancer. \nThe audiobook version of QUEEN BESS is published by Tantor Audio. SUMMARY:Learning\, Leaning\, Loving: Increasing Support & Ending Stigma Around Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, artist and entrepreneur\, JJ Long\, was diagnosed Bipolar 1 after having a string of manic episodes and delusions and was admitted into a psychiatric ward where he was put on mood stabilizers and antipsychotics to stop the mania. After being discharged from the hospital\, he remained on medication for over seven years and began his healing journey with the help of psychologists\, psychiatrists\, PCP\, coaches\, and supportive family and friends. On Dec. 31\, 2021\, JJ was finally able to successfully taper off medications and was medication-free for two and a half years with no manic episodes. During the summer of 2024\, however\, he endured another unexpected manic episode and was placed back in the psychiatric ward for three weeks. With many lessons learned\, JJ continues to move forward in his artistic and entrepreneurial career as he works to expand mental health awareness and advocacy with optimism born from experience. From first signs to situational episodes\, JJ will share his experience and thoughts about how to support loved ones\, how to advocate for yourself (and others)\, and ways to end the mental illness stigma by embracing love\, practicing kindness\, and increasing helpful support for all. Find out more about JJ Long and his art at www.jjartworks.com.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare’s Queens: A One-Woman Play WITH POORNIMA KIRBY
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare grew up under the reign of Elizabeth I—a mercurial\, intelligent\, and powerful queen—and her influence is written across many of Shakespeare’s finest female characters. Whether in his dangerous siren-queens like Lady Macbeth and Margaret\, in playful\, wayward leaders like Titania and Kate\, or redemptive characters like Hermione and Miranda\, Shakespeare seems fascinated by how each of these women wielded power and made choices. Should they speak their minds\, or keep to the shadows? Work together or stand alone? And where does their power lie: in tyranny or mercy? Wordplay or swordplay? Created and performed by Shakespearean actress Poornima Kirby\, this jewel of a play dances between Elizabeth’s story and Shakespeare’s own life as a writer and father to two strong-minded daughters. With history\, humor\, and sparkling poetry\, Shakespeare’s Queens is a heartfelt and refreshing exploration of some of the Bard’s loveliest verses. \nPoornima Kirby is a classically trained actress\, writer\, and director\, based in Concord\, MA\, specializing in classical and poetic texts\, as well as co-created theater. She studied drama at Vassar College and trained in acting and Shakespeare performance at Shakespeare & Co. and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Her regional theater credits include “Sleep No More” with the A.R.T.\, “Hamlet” with Actors’ Shakespeare Project\, “Daughters of Venus” with Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater\, and “Much Ado about Nothing” with Bay Colony Shakespeare. She has also appeared in several independent films\, commercials\, industrials\, and voice-overs\, and has worked as a teaching artist in the Boston Public Schools and Tufts Medical Center. She is Artistic Director for Theatre of Eternal Values—America (a branch of an Italy-based international company)\, where she has written\, directed\, and performed in several original productions. She is also a cofounder of New Muse Productions\, where she has scripted or adapted one-hour\, two-person versions of King Lear and A Christmas Carol—sometimes playing 18 characters in a single performance. Shakespeare’s Queens is her first original solo production. She is passionate about bringing live theatre directly to audiences where they live\, work\, and play! Read more at: www.PoornimaKirby.com

SUMMARY:Sunday Stroll Walking Tour: Lexington Celebrates!
DESCRIPTION:Parades\, pageants\, and pandemonium have defined the many commemorations of the 1775 Battle of Lexington and the first shots of the War for Independence. Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat\, and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos\, and celebrations!\n\nStarting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, this tour explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. The tour is 1 hour long and covers about a 1/2 mile on flat ground.\n\n$10 members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Primavera: Spring Produce Italian-Style with Chef Claudia Catalano
DESCRIPTION:Join local chef and food writer Claudia Catalano for an Italian-inspired\, springtime cooking demonstration. Participants will learn the techniques and recipes used to create simple dishes that combine seasonal produce with classic Italian flavors. \nUsing the best of New England’s early spring harvest\, Claudia will guide you through proper produce selection\, efficient knife skills\, and professional tips that will up your cooking game. You will nibble on Italian snacks while learning how to make asparagus and pecorino fritters\, a savory appetizer that her Sicilian grandmother often made. Next\, we’ll get busy with gnocchi\, the beloved Italian potato dumplings. Fresh herbs—some of the first produce to emerge after New England’s long\, cold winter—will be transformed into a bright green sauce for the dumplings. Lastly\, you’ll learn a special technique for making flaky pie dough. The buttery pastry will form the base of a sweet ricotta and rhubarb crostata. \nCome hungry! Plenty of each dish will be prepared in advance so that everyone can enjoy a generous taste of Claudia’s cooking. You will leave with printed recipes\, a ton of new kitchen knowledge\, and hopefully some new friends! \nAbout Claudia: \nClaudia Catalano is a chef\, writer\, and food photographer who left a career in branding to earn a Master of Liberal Arts in Gastronomy from Boston University in 2016. She is a proud recipient of the Julia Child Teaching Assistant award in the Culinary Arts Program\, where she worked with award-winning chefs\, including the legendary Jacques Pepin. She continued her involvement with BU by becoming a part-time faculty member while simultaneously operating her own personal chef business under the name Wild Carrot. She also teaches cooking classes at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts and various other community organizations. Her recipes\, stories\, and photographs have been featured regularly in The Boston Globe and Edible Boston. She now works as an editor and recipe developer at America’s Test Kitchen in Boston’s Seaport District. A descendant of Sicilian immigrants on both sides of her family\, her food often evokes the memories of her mother and grandmother. \nPlease note: this is a cooking demonstration class. Attendees will be served a sampling of each dish prepared during class. \nIf for any reason a class needs to be cancelled\, we will postpone the class to another date. Refunds will be given to those unable to make the new date.
