SUMMARY:WILSON FARM’S ICE CREAM SOCIAL AND TOUCH-A-TRUCK EVENT\, AUG 5 & 6
DESCRIPTION:Join in a giant ice cream party and get a chance to reach out and Touch-A-Truck at Wilson Farm on Sat and Sun\, August 5 and 6\, 11am-4pm. Ice cream lovers can taste scoops of creamy goodness from Shaw Farm Dairy\, Maple Valley Milk Company and Giovanna Gelato at sampling stations throughout the front of the farmstand. Sundae fans can “dig” into the Wilson Farm Dirt Sundae\, featuring a scoop of chocolate or vanilla ice cream\, crumbled chocolate cookies\, gummy worms\, chocolate sauce and/or caramel sauce and whipped cream. \nWilson Farm’s first ever Touch-A-Truck event will also be part of the festivities. Adults and kids of all ages will get a chance to get up close and touch a variety of Wilson Farm vehicles\, including a front-end loader\, field tractors and a truck cab that pulls semi-trailers. Firefighters from the Lexington Fire Department will also be on hand with one of their ladder trucks for people to check out. \nTickets ($1 each) for ice cream samples and sundaes will be for sale\, and each sample will require a designated number of tickets depending on ice cream variety. 100% of the proceeds raised during this weekend will support Team Wilson Farm’s bike ride in the Pan-Mass Challenge. Participants will ‘Remember the Lexington Ladies’ by wearing period-appropriate hats\, caps\, and aprons. \nYou can get into the spirit of the event by wearing period clothing\, or by dressing in this year’s event theme colors: black\, purple\, yellow\, and pink. Enjoy the spinning demonstration\, and help lend a hand as LexSeeHer puts a fresh spin on women’s importance in the years leading up to the Revolution. Don’t miss the chance to sign the ribbons that will be used for the Ribbon Cutting event after the plaza is complete! \nAnna Harrington was 29 years old when she hosted 45 ‘ladies’ and their spinning wheels at her home. This was a woman-centered form of protest\, and a way that women could contribute to the economic\, political\, and social scene. \nMeredith Bergmann has been commissioned by LexSeeHer\, Inc\, to sculpt a new monument for the town. It includes Anna Harrington as one of the 18th century honorees. Lexington Historical Society and LexArt are co-sponsoring this year’s event. DESCRIPTION:More than a dozen Lexington residents are opening their gardens to visitors on Lexington Living Landscapes’ 2nd Annual Open Gardens Day on Saturday\, September 9. This is an opportunity for visitors to see a variety of gardens and get ideas for how they might incorporate more native plants\, fewer chemicals\, and more sustainable practices into their own landscaping. DESCRIPTION:Terrorism Expert to Discuss Domestic Terrorism on September 11 \nIn person and by Zoom at Cary Memorial Library \nThe first major foreign terrorist attack on the U.S. mainland occurred on September 11\, 2001. The US responded with all its might. Since then\, not one such attack has occurred on US soil. \nAccording to Professor Emerita Edith Flynn\, who focused on terrorism for more than 20 years at Northeastern University\, international terrorism remains a significant threat\, but our most pressing terrorist threat today comes from within our own borders in the form of disenfranchised\, polarized and alienated far-right citizens\, radicalized and recruited mainly through social media and the internet\, emerging as domestic terrorists. \nOn Monday\, September 11 at Cary Memorial Library and on Zoom\, Dr. Flynn will analyze the roots of domestic terrorism and the US successes and failures in fighting it. She will examine the social\, political\, and economic costs of the U.S. counterterrorism response and suggest ways and means for counteracting this trend. DESCRIPTION:Sing With Lexington Pops Chorus in its 42nd Season \nLexington Pops Chorus is holding non-audition\, open rehearsals for potential new members. Two free\nopen rehearsals will be held Tuesdays\, September 12th and 19th at 7:30 pm in Clark Hall\, Hancock\nChurch\, 1912 Massachusetts Ave\, Lexington. Singers must be able to read music. \nNow beginning its 42nd year\, the chorus enjoys the enthusiasm of members from over 15 area towns.\nWe sing a wide variety of music\, including classical\, Broadway\, jazz\, folk and gospel.\nOur winter concerts on January 19 and 20\, 2024\, will be dedicated to Bob Lague\, who directed the\nchorus for 41 years since its inception in 1982. DESCRIPTION:What happens when your DEIB (diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging) efforts become stagnant or ineffective? At the height of the pandemic\, a nonprofit organization in Western NY found itself in this very position. \nJoin Lexington-based Nonprofit Net’s virtual seminar to hear more about the organization’s trauma-informed training journey\, the outcomes\, and the benefits of becoming trauma aware in the space of DEIB. This approach is truly eye-opening. \nAbout the Speaker\nSusan Bull is the President and CEO of Arbor Housing and Development\, whose mission is to enhance the quality of life in communities by building independence and creating housing options. Susan has been in her current role since July 2021\, and for two years prior\, she served as Arbor’s Chief Operations Officer. \nSusan took a non-traditional path to what she defines as success by serving in the US Army active duty for five years\, later earning a bachelor’s degree in Community and Human Services\, and a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management and Leadership. Susan’s commitment to ethical governance\, sound program administration\, and care for people is evidenced in her leadership and service to the community.

She will discuss how the imagery was inspired by the farm and also by a popular Paraguayan folk tale. \nThe prints are available for sale in her studio. \nThis project was partially funded by the Arlington Cultural Council. (See www.lexartscouncil.org › porchfestporchfest2023 – Lexington Council for the Arts) \nThe “Highway 49” band\, formed in 2009\, is a group of six talented musicians who will delight you with their tight covers of classic rock songs from the 50s\, 60s\, 70s and 80s\, including songs from Elton John\, Carol King\, The Beatles\, Eagles\, Van Morrison\, The Drifters\, Jefferson Airplane\, Fleetwood Mac\, The Pretenders\, and many other artists. Original members Murray Daniels on keyboards and Randy Bowlby\, bass guitar have been playing with the band and singing together from the start at private parties and social events in the Greater Lexington area. The group has really hit its stride in recent years with vocalists Linda Kukolich and Karen Daniels\, greatly adding to the variety and richness of the band’s repertoire. Driving guitar rhythms from Steve Kukolich and Rick Tedesco\, on drums\, will have you on your feet! \nSeveral Highway 49 members also play and sing in the Redeemer church band at selected services and special events.
