SUMMARY:Lexington Living Landscapes' Open Garden Days
DESCRIPTION:More and more homeowners are embracing landscaping that emphasizes native plants and organic methods to create more wildlife- and people-friendly yards. Are you curious to see what other gardeners have done? Stop by any of multiple locations to see the many forms a pollinator garden can take\, or learn what alternatives to the traditional lawn fellow residents have tried. \nThe homeowners involved are generously opening their yards to visitors in the hopes that you’ll see something that will help or inspire you in your own landscaping\, and to learn from you as well. Four gardeners are participating on the 13th\, and an additional 11 on Saturday\, September 19. Each property will be open to visitors during a two- or three-hour window. Visit as many or as few as you wish. No ticket or pre-registration is needed. \nA detailed schedule and map of participating properties on each day is available at www.lexingtonlivinglandscapes.org.

SUMMARY:From Suffragette to War Worker: Stories of Women War Workers at Raytheon 1941-45
DESCRIPTION:This talk spans the 100-year fight for women’s rights\, beginning with the Suffragette movement and the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920.  It moves on to the great stock market crash on Black Monday in 1929\, and the New Deal as a response to the Great Depression under President Franklin D. Roosevelt\, before focusing on America’s entry into World War II in 1941.  Suddenly\, war plants all over America needed female workers. Here in Massachusetts\, Raytheon aggressively advertised for women workers with recruitment posters\, newspapers\, and radio ads. Soon\, thousands of women were performing all types of electronic component production and assembly work\, from radar to radio tubes. At the insistence of Eleanor Roosevelt\, the ranks of the military and other professions\, including Civil Defense\, Red Cross\, etc. became open to women.  At war’s end on September 2\, 1945\, tens of thousands of women were immediately laid off.  Many women\, however\, found newly earned access to jobs once held by men. SUMMARY:Sing with Lexington Pops Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Lexington Pops Chorus will hold two free open rehearsals on September 8th and 15th at 7:30 p.m. in Clark Hall at Hancock Church\, 1912 Massachusetts Ave. Lexington.  We invite new singers to join us in September and January\, and we especially welcome new tenors.  Auditions are not required\, but singers must be able to read music.  We sing a wide variety of music\, including classical\, jazz\, blues\, folk\, gospel\, Broadway\, and more. \nOur winter concerts scheduled for Friday evening\, January 15th\, and Sunday afternoon\, January 17th\, 2027\, will feature Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat in D (BWV 243)\, A Gershwin Portrait\, “Satin Doll”\, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”\, and other selections.  Our spring concerts will be on Friday evening\, May 21st\, and Sunday afternoon\, May 23rd\, 2027.  We often have guest soloists and additional instrumentalists at our concerts. \nLexington Pops Chorus is in its 45th season and enjoys the enthusiasm of singers from over 20 towns.  Maxwell Evrard has been the chorus’s Conductor/Director for four years.  John Tarrh has been the Assistant Conductor for 12 years.  David Owens\, Accompanist\, is in his 23rd season with the chorus.  Lexington Pops Chorus is a member of The Greater Boston Choral Consortium. \nFor more information\, please visit our website www.LexPops.org or call Roseann at (781) 365-0576.  (Leave a message and Roseann will call you back.)  We look forward to welcoming you!

SUMMARY:The Moth Ball
DESCRIPTION:Following last year’s popular and oversubscribed event\, join us once again for a repeat performance of a special kind of ball this September\, but don’t worry about bringing your dancing shoes! Once the sun goes down\, bugs will be the ones showing off their moves. During this nature walk hosted by both the Town of Lexington Conservation Division and CLC\, and with special guest Jace Porter of the Global Entomology Coalition\, we will get up close and personal with the nighttime residents of our local conservation areas. We will be using a large sheet illuminated with ultraviolet light to attract all manner of fascinating critters – moths\, beetles\, flies\, spiders\, stick insects\, or true bugs are just some of the things we might see (and if you’re curious what the differences are between “bugs” and “true bugs\,” then this might be the event for you!). We will also have on display a collection of previously captured and pinned specimens of all shapes\, sizes\, and species to supplement the living bugs we encounter. Come learn all about some of the near-limitless forms of arthropods with us\, and see what the buzz is all about. \nLong pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toed shoes\, and a headlamp (preferably with a red light setting) are strongly recommended. Hooded shirts/sweaters or mesh head nets are recommended. Magnifying glasses are encouraged. Suicide prevention isn’t just about responding to those who are struggling or who we’re concerned about. It’s about empowering entire communities to know how to help someone at risk and providing them with the tools to recognize warning signs and take action. \nDeveloped by the creators of SOS Signs of Suicide\, a trusted evidence-based suicide prevention program\, Suicide Prevention for Communities is a facilitator-led training that uses video and interactive discussions to help adults build the confidence and skills to talk openly and effectively about suicide. \nThis adult training is designed to engage diverse audiences and is applicable across a range of personal and professional roles. The content emphasizes that anyone can play a role in supporting someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. It also highlights the effectiveness of restricting access to lethal means and provides information on local and national mental health resources. \nKey Learnings:\n• A general understanding of suicide and why safe language is important\n• How to recognize warning signs and risk factors for suicide\n• How to use the ACT (Acknowledge\, Care\, Tell) framework when someone is struggling with thoughts of suicide\n• Ways to keep a person safe while connecting them to qualified resources

DESCRIPTION:Harmony on the Green Coffeehouse Concerts is thrilled to kick off its 5th season with the terrific Ari Hest. Hest has crafted a unique path in music – independently building a loyal following through relentless college touring\, then on to major label albums\, and then reimagining listener engagement through fan-driven projects like “52” and his Patreon-powered “The Treehouse Project”. \nA Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter (Best Folk Album\, 2017) who began his career two decades ago\, he’s performed both in the U.S. and abroad with artists like The Indigo Girls\, Martin Sexton\, Judy Collins. and Suzanne Vega. Many of Ari’s songs have appeared on TV and film – The Path\, The Lincoln Lawyer\, Private Practice\, Army Wives\, and One Tree Hill\, to name a few. \nAri’s newest endeavor\, The Treehouse Project\, has him writing\, recording\, and releasing a song on his Patreon every two weeks since early 2022. Based on the votes of his subscribers\, he remixes the 10 favorite songs from each year and releases an album. The project is currently in its fourth year and is approaching 100 original songs. \nOur concerts are still just $25 (plus ticketing fees) and have\, as always\, a “pay what you can” feature so that everyone can enjoy live music!

DESCRIPTION:Po-Shen Loh – October 24\, 2026\, 8 p.m. \n \nIn a world where artificial intelligence can now complete many of the tasks once used to measure academic achievement\, Carnegie Mellon University professor\, social entrepreneur\, and educational innovator Po-Shen Loh invites families\, educators\, students\, and community leaders to consider a powerful question: What skills will matter most for the next generation? \nDrawing from his experiences speaking with families and educators in more than 100 cities each year\, teaching in classrooms\, and learning directly from students\, parents\, teachers\, and AI innovators\, Loh offers a hopeful vision for preparing young people not only to adapt to change\, but also to lead with purpose. Rather than focusing only on grades\, test scores\, or memorization\, Loh makes the case for nurturing the deeply human qualities technology cannot replace: critical thinking\, creativity\, communication\, courage\, leadership\, curiosity\, and the ability to solve unfamiliar problems. SUMMARY:After I'm Gone: In-Person Workshops
DESCRIPTION:We invite you as a resident or whose loved one is a resident of Lexington to attend a 4-Session workshop series to support you in planning for the future. This workshop series is focused on older caregivers who have adult family members with intellectual and developmental disabilities\, including autism. Employees of the town are also welcome to apply. \nThe workshop covers: \n\nOverview of future planning\nImportance of acting so your loved one\, you and others are prepared for future realities\nKeeping the adult with the disability in the center and advancing his/her decision-making role\nSteps to help you identify and support your successor(s) as the coach or caregiver\nEstablishing a support network\nReviewing the future planning guide\nBasic overview of residential options and other services\n\n  \nThe series will be held on Tuesday\, October 20th and 27th\, and November 3rd and 10th from 4:30 to 6pm.   Registration is first-come\, first-served and will be capped at 25 individuals.
