DESCRIPTION:Changing Hearts | Changing Minds\, An Inspiring Art Exhibit \nFeaturing the works of Jaypix Belmer\, L’Merchie Frazier\, Khalid Kodi\, and Hakim Raquib \n Exhibition Opening: Sunday\, May 18\, 2025\, 5:30 p.m. \nArtist Talkback and Reception:  Sunday\, June 1\, 2025 at 12 p.m.\n First Parish in Lexington\, 7 Harrington Rd.\, Lexington\, MA \nOn Sunday\, June 1\, at First Parish in Lexington from 12 to 2 p.m.\, there will be an Artist Talkback and Reception for an inspiring and vibrant art exhibit\, Changing Hearts | Changing Minds.  The exhibit features the work of four distinguished visual artists from Greater Boston’s African and Black artistic and cultural communities: Jaypix Belmer\, Photography; L’Merchie Frazier\, Textiles; Khalid Kodi\, Mixed Media; and Hakim Raquib\, Digital Media. \nThe art exhibit opening will be May 18 at 5:30 p.m.\, immediately following the Jams for Justice concert\, a benefit concert for UU Urban Ministry. Art can also be viewed on Sundays\, May 25 through June 15\, during the hours of 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, and by appointment by contacting Sirarpi Heghinian-Walzer (sirarpiwalzer@gmail.com\, 781.307.7306).   \nThis exhibit marks the first collaboration between the Arts Team of First Parish in Lexington\, led by Sirarpi Heghinian-Walzer\, and the UU Urban Ministry. The work is curated by the UU Urban Ministry’s Art Liaison\, D. Walters. All proceeds from sales will go directly to the artists. \nThe UU Urban Ministry is a Roxbury-based\, nonsectarian nonprofit organization with nearly a 200-year legacy of working for racial\, economic\, and social justice. The ministry provides essential programs in education\, housing\, and life skills\, with a mission focused on dismantling racism and promoting equity and empowerment. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nJaypix Belmer (Jay\, they/them) is an African American artist and documentary photographer whose work captures the “visual soul” of their subjects. Their photography involves authentic engagement with communities of color\, LGBTQ+ communities\, and urban neighborhoods\, serving as a community liaison and capturing cultural realities that are not often visible. Jaypix works on local and national commercial projects\, focusing on anthropology and amplifying artist identity and environmental assets through archiving and exhibition to build vibrant\, livable neighborhoods. They are a Polly Thayer Starr Visiting Artist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. \nL’Merchie Frazier is a visual activist\, public artist\, historian\, educator\, and poet. Frazier’s innovative art supports social and restorative justice and pursues civil and human rights through a lens of 500 years of Black and Indigenous history. Her lifelong work\, “Save Me From My Amnesia\,” calls for action to Remember\, Reclaim\, Restore\, and Reimagine. She is an artist-in-residence at the African American Master Artist-in-Residence Program (AAMARP). Her works are permanently housed in institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution\, the White House\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, the Peabody Essex Museum\, and the Dallas Museum of Art. \nKhalid Kodi is a Sudanese American master artist\, educator\, and cultural critic known for his prolific participatory art projects in Sudan\, Africa. He uses art to facilitate dialogue across various forms of difference and addresses social justice issues such as racism\, injustice\, slavery\, wars\, and genocide\, particularly in Africa. His work employs non-traditional mediums like music\, art\, and community storytelling to reclaim marginalized aspects of identity and enact resilience against structural injustices. He is an artist-in-residence at the African American Master Artist-in-Residence Program (AAMARP). His work has been widely exhibited and featured in publications such as The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, and Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art. \nHakim Raquib is an artist driven by an insatiable curiosity for the technical and interpretive boundaries of photography\, active in Boston after formative years in New York\, California\, and France. Drawing from extensive educational\, professional\, and personal experiences\, Raquib delves deep into his inner self to uncover and capture the hidden meanings of the world around him. He is an artist-in-residence at the African American Master Artist-in-Residence Program (AAMARP). DESCRIPTION:Munroe Center for the Arts (MCA) invites the community to a public gallery reception for this year’s Student Show on Thursday\, June 12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The show features teens’ visual art and works from adult ceramics students as well. DESCRIPTION:This free self-defense and awareness seminar is designed to empower women with skills and knowledge to defend themselves. Participants will learn basic self-defense techniques and will be taught strategies to help with awareness in various environments. This course is taught by Charles Crayton Jr\, who is the chief instructor of Combined Martial Arts\, INC. Charles is a self-defense expert and is a nationally certified R.A.D. instructor. This course will increase your confidence in your individual abilities and help you stay safe. \nChief Instructor Charles Crayton\, Jr. established Combined Martial Arts in 1998. DESCRIPTION:Munroe Center for the Arts (MCA) invites the community to a public gallery reception for this year’s Student Show\, on Thursday\, June 12 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. The show features teens’ visual art and works from adult ceramics students as well. Come see a wide variety of artwork from Laurel Smith’s “In Your Hands” teen artists studio class\, including paintings and collages. While Judith Cooper’s adult ceramicists display pieces both whimsical and functional.\n\nThe gallery reception is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:**OFFSITE LOCATION** The performance will take place at Estabrook Auditorium in the Cary Memorial Building\, 1605 Massachusetts Ave\, Lexington \nA concert for the semiquincentennial celebration of the Battle of Lexington \nLexington Strings will present a recital of music contemporary to the April 19\, 1775 skirmish on the Lexington Battle Green. \nThe concert program includes: \n• Antonio Vivaldi:  Concerto in G major for Solo Violin\, Strings and Continuo\, Op. 3 “L’Estro Armonico”\, No. 3\, RV 310 (1711) \n• Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:  Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major\, K. 218 (1775) \n• Ludwig van Beethoven:  Sonata No. 3 in Eb major for Violin and Piano\, Op. 12\, No. 3 (1797-1798) \n• Johann Sebastian Bach:  Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major for Violin\, Two Recorders\, Strings and Continuo\, BWV 1049 (1721) \n  \nBased in Lexington\, Massachusetts since 1984\, Lexington Strings are musicians Letitia Hom\, Yukiko Ueno Egozy\, Michael Valdez and Vida Baterina Hom. \nMs. Hom plays a violin originally commissioned by and made for Roman Totenberg in 1982.  Created by luthier Guy Rabut in New York City\, the violin is patterned after Mr. Totenberg’s 1736 Giuseppe “del Gesù” Guarneri violin made in Cremona\, Italy. \nThis program is made possible by the generous donors to the Cary Library Foundation.

Her acclaimed book of translations\, GOLD\, Poems by Rumi\, was published by New York Review Books in 2022\, and her second volume\, WATER\, will be released on April 22\, 2025\, also by NYRB Classics. A bicultural woman with ears tuned to the music of American free verse as well as to the subtleties of the Persian text\, Gafori aims to transmit the whirling movement and leaping progression of thought and imagery in Rumi’s poems into contemporary American poetry. Gafori is a 2024 MacDowell fellow and the recipient of a 2023 New York State Council on the Arts grant supporting the development of her cross-media performance piece based on GOLD. Weaving translations\, original text\, and musical compositions sung in Persian and English\, she offers audiences glimpses of the astonishing rhythm and wordplay of Rumi’s original text\, while uncovering how deeply and urgently the poetry dialogues with our times. Gafori’s translations and her original writings have been published by various journals and presses\, including Harvard Review\, Columbia University Press\, the Brooklyn Rail\, Literary Hub\, Palewell Press\, and elsewhere.

DESCRIPTION:Some Lexingtonians were part of anti-slavery efforts in Massachusetts as early as the 1830s. Learn how families and individuals associated with the Ellen Stone Building—like the Robbins\, Stone\, and Follen families and activists like Rev. Theodore Parker—worked to be heard in these early days despite significant opposition from those who profited from slavery. Hear how these anti-slavery advocates continued their efforts up through the 1850s when dramatic events in Boston led to open conflict with “slavecatchers” seeking to capture self-emancipated Black residents\, and the tide of public opinion began to turn.

DESCRIPTION:When most people—especially in Lexington—hear the name Henry Wadsworth Longfellow today\, they probably think of his 1860 poem\, “Paul Revere’s Ride.” But what about the man behind the famous verses?\n\nIn his personal life\, Longfellow was surrounded by people who we would today consider members of the LGBTQ+ community\, including friends\, siblings\, children and grandchildren. For this special Pride Month presentation\, public historian Meaghan Michel will explore LGBTQ+ history through three generations of the Longfellow family. Join us and learn how queer people in the 19th and early 20th centuries faced hardships\, found love and acceptance\, and made their mark on history.\n\nMeaghan Michel is an independent historian with a B.A. in Public History from Suffolk University and a decade of experience as a ranger at the National Parks of Boston\, including four years at Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site.
