SUMMARY:Livestrong's 343-Mile First Responder Ride for Resilience\, Honoring Fallen 9/11 Firefighters\, to Pass Through Lexington
DESCRIPTION:Ahead of the 25th anniversary of September 11\, Livestrong\, a nonprofit  dedicated to improving the daily lives of cancer survivors\, is hosting a landmark First Responder Ride for Resilience\, a five-day\, 343-mile cycling journey from Boston to the 9/11 Memorial in New York City honoring the 343 firefighters lost on September 11\, 2001. Riders will move through Lexington on Sunday\, September 6. Local residents are invited to cheer on riders\, volunteer at a water stop\, or donate to show their support.  \nAccording to research from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health\, firefighters are nine percent more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and 14 percent more likely to die from it than the general public. The ride brings together first responders\, cancer survivors\, and community members to raise funds benefiting Friends of Firefighters\, the Boston Fire Cancer Foundation\, and Livestrong\, expanding access to cancer survivorship and mental health programs for first responders and their families.  \n“This ride wouldn’t be possible without the communities that welcome it along the way\,” said Suzanne Stone\, President and CEO of Livestrong. “Every stop gives people an opportunity to honor the firefighters and first responders affected by September 11 while supporting organizations that continue to serve them. SUMMARY:Alan Dawson: Leading Lexingtonian
DESCRIPTION:Lexington has heroes in every century\, as change-seekers have made their mark on the town. Through building community\, working for social change\, pioneering in their fields\, and pursuing creative passions\, Leading Lexingtonians keep Lexington on the map as a historic place. This lecture series highlights their accomplishments\, which are also displayed on a rotating basis in the Lexington Depot Museum. \nAlan Dawson was an extraordinary jazz drummer\, percussionist\, and teacher who inspired countless students to pursue professional music and instruction. His accomplishments were many: He played with the Army Dance Band at Fort Dix during the Korean War. He taught at Berklee College of Music\, and offered private lessons in his own home. His drumming was featured on albums with artists such as Quincy Jones\, Clifford Brown\, Dexter Gordon\, and Dave Brubeck. He formed his own band\, the Alan Dawson Quartet\, and had a posthumous album\, Waltzin’ with Flo\, released in 2000. Most importantly\, his teaching methods are still being used today by his students who continue to lift up the next generation of jazz musicians.  \nJoin us as we welcome family\, former students\, and music enthusiasts to honor Dawson’s legacy in Lexington. Enjoy live music from Chris Neville\, Ron Mahdi\, and John Ramsay\, followed by an interactive celebration of Dawson’s career led by Dawson’s daughter Deborah Mullins and student Mike Powers. SUMMARY:Help Shape the Town’s Waste Collection Program
DESCRIPTION:The Town is preparing to roll out a modernized waste collection program in the summer of 2027 that will help control rising costs and reduce waste. The new system will include transitioning to automated collection\, which will mean residents will be provided with new wheeled carts for both trash and recycling. Trash\, recycling\, and compost will continue to be picked up weekly. \nThis fall\, the Select Board will be finalizing the updated program design. The Board will be making decisions such as what size carts will be provided\, what options are available for overflow waste\, and what flexibility can be built into the program for residents with varied needs. \nBefore finalizing the program\, we want to hear from you! Town staff will be hosting a series of community meetings to get input from residents on program design options. \nPlease consider attending one of the upcoming meetings to learn more about the upcoming changes and to weigh in on which option you prefer. \nThe meeting on September 15th has both in-person and virtual attendance options. You can join in person at the Lexington Police Community Room or virtually (Zoom link).

Scheduled for Sunday\, Oct. 4\, funds raised from the Walk support all forms of adult and pediatric care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The 2026 event will aim to raise $10 million in support of Dana-Farber’s mission to defy cancer by leading the way in groundbreaking research and lifesaving patient care. \nThe Details: \nThe Jimmy Fund Walk is the only organized walk permitted to use the famed Boston Marathon® course\, and participants have the flexibility to choose from four distance options: \n\n5K walk: Starting at Dana-Farber’s Longwood Medical Campus\n10K walk: Starting in Newton\nHalf Marathon walk: Starting in Wellesley\nMarathon walk: Starting in Hopkinton\n\nAlong the route\, participants will be motivated by Hero posters\, photos\, and quotes from Dana-Farber patients\, who are considered the heart and inspiration for the event.
