SUMMARY:Sing with Lexington Pops Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Lexington Pops Chorus will hold three free open rehearsals\, September 2\, 9\, and 16\, in Clark Hall at Hancock Church (1912 Mass Ave\, Lexington) on the Green. We welcome new singers in September and January. Auditions are not required\, but singers must be able to read music. We sing a wide variety of music\, including classical\, jazz\, blues\, folk\, gospel\, Broadway\, and more. Our winter concert will be held in mid-January. We also have a spring concert\, held in mid-May. Please check out our website www.LexPops.org for details. If you love to sing\, join us! \nOur January concert title is At the Opera with Lexington Pops Chorus. This concert will feature songs from Queen’s landmark album\, A Night at the Opera\, including “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “You’re My Best Friend\,” as well as many of the most famous opera choruses ever written\, including “Va Pensiero” from Giuseppi Verdi’s Nabucco\, and “Les Voici” from Georges Bizet’s Carmen\, and much\, much more! \nLexington Pops Chorus is in its 44th season and enjoys the enthusiasm of singers from over 20 towns. Maxwell Evrard is the chorus’s conductor/director. John Tarrh has been the assistant conductor for 11 years. David Owens\, accompanist\, is in his 22nd season with the chorus. SUMMARY:OFFSITE - An Evening with Heather Clark\, Author of The Scrapbook: A Novel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Heather Clark as she presents an overview of her new novel “The Scrapbook” and shares photos from her grandfather’s wartime scrapbook and of her research trip to Germany (Dachau\, Munich\, Berchtesgaden) in the summer of 2023. A Q&A will follow. \n“The Scrapbook” is a novel of love and war that moves between the 1990s and 1940s. It tells the story of Anna\, an American\, and Christoph\, a German\, and their grandfathers\, who fought on opposite sides during World War Two. Most of the novel is set in Germany and told by Anna\, though some chapters follow Anna’s and Christoph’s grandfathers as they fight in Bavaria and Belarus. \nAbout the Author: \nHeather Clark is a biographer\, literary critic and novelist. Her recent awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism\, the Slightly Foxed Best First Biography Prize\, a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholars fellowship\, a New York Public Library Cullman Center Fellowship\, and a Leon Levy Center for Biography Fellowship. She is the author of five books\, including “Red Comet: The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath\,” which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, and the LA Times Book Prize in Biography\, and was one of the New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2021. Clark’s work has appeared in publications including The New York Times\, Harvard Review\, Time\, Air Mail\, Lit Hub\, Poetry\, and The Times Literary Supplement. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Harvard and a doctorate in English from Oxford. \nRegistration is required. \nCopies of the author’s book will be available for purchase from Maxima Book Center on the evening of the event.
