SUMMARY:The Roots of September 11 and the Changing Face of Terrorism
DESCRIPTION:Terrorism Expert to Discuss Domestic Terrorism on September 11 \nIn person and by Zoom at Cary Memorial Library \nThe first major foreign terrorist attack on the U.S. mainland occurred on September 11\, 2001. The US responded with all its might. Since then\, not one such attack has occurred on US soil. \nAccording to Professor Emerita Edith Flynn\, who focused on terrorism for more than 20 years at Northeastern University\, international terrorism remains a significant threat\, but our most pressing terrorist threat today comes from within our own borders in the form of disenfranchised\, polarized and alienated far-right citizens\, radicalized and recruited mainly through social media and the internet\, emerging as domestic terrorists. \nOn Monday\, September 11 at Cary Memorial Library and on Zoom\, Dr. Flynn will analyze the roots of domestic terrorism and the US successes and failures in fighting it. She will examine the social\, political\, and economic costs of the U.S. counterterrorism response and suggest ways and means for counteracting this trend. Sponsored by the Lexington Veterans Association\, the program is free and open to the public with coffee and conversation at 12:45 and the program at 1:15 p.m. Register for the Zoom portion at carylibrary.org/programs.
